.$joomblog_header->blog_title.
What is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
31. He-Man, Masters of the Universe-Greatest Movie Ever?
Monday, 23 October 2006

I was down in Loveland this past weekend looking around Dick's Sporting Store. After buying a couple of clearance items, my buddy and I stopped at GameStop to gander. While looking around the used video games, I happened to stray towards the used DVD shelf. There was a 3 DVD's for 20 bucks deal. So I started scanning the titles. Long behold, I found the Holy Grail of cinema. No it wasn't Casablanca, or The African Queen, or even a Star Wars flick. It was He-Man, Masters of the Universe. I couldn't believe what I had found. I hadn't seen the movie since I was just a tot, but when I found it, it was like I was 8 years old again. I of course, was a He-Man fanatic back in my younger days. I even had the Gray Skull castle. My dad made me a wood sword, and I believe we actually wore out the VHS tape from our local gas station/video store in my hometown. Of course, the movie is full of cliches, not so hot acting, and overbearing dialouge. But I hadn't seen the movie in over 10 years I am sure. Still, it seemed to bring out the kid in me again. 32. My fav. violent video games and CO's congress race
Thursday, 19 October 2006

What in the world do violent video games and Colorado's congress race have in common? A lot more than you may think. Ed Perlmutter, who is running for a seat in congress from Colorado's 7th district, supposedly has video games on his mind. As many of you have probably seen, one of Perlmutter's TV ads prioritizes safety of childern. Two key points of Mr. Perlmutter's ad on TV, and stated on his website, are keeping violent video games out of the hands of childern, and creating a national background checking system for teachers. Perlmutter is running from the democratic side. It is hard for me to believe that video games and background checks for teachers is more important than the war in Iraq, our economy, and social security issues, just to name a few. So Mr. Perlmutter, here are a few of my favorite video games that use blood, gore, profanity, and sex to improve hand-eye coordination. Oh, and if you take them away from me I'll go postal, becuase thats what makes people kill, nevermind sending 18 year olds to foreign countries with M-16s. 10. "Heavy Metal" series. Remember this dandy? This game revolves around suped-up armed cars whose sole purpose is to blow each other up. Plug in with friends and annihlate each other with napalm and machine guns. I remeber first throwing this disc in my playstation as a 12 year old, and hearing Rob Zombie being blared through my TV. Classic stuff. Favorite title of series: "Black" 9. "Blitz" series. How can you beat football without sportsmanship? You can't. Pick up "The League" the newest addition to the series and use steriods, stomp on players heads, give career-ending hits to others. 8. "Medal of Honor" series. Now here's a question. Would Perlmutter and other politicians pull titles that revolve around military history and the supremacy and righteousness of the USA? Kill Germans, Japanese, and others in this awesome war-game series. My favorite title of the series: "Medal of Honor:Frontline." 7. "Black" This is a rather new release. Simply put, you can shoot everything and anything in this game. A trigger-happy paradise. 6. "State of Emergency" From the creators of Rockstar games, this guy revolves around looting and rioting. A crazy game. 5. "Resident Evil" series. Love killing things that are already dead? Pumping lead into a zombie's corpse? Look no further than the Resident Evil titles. I remember the first time I put this guy in my playstation when I was just a tot and blowing zombies heads off with a sawed-off shotgun. 4. "25 to Life" This game got a ton of press before it was released because it dealt with gang-bangers knocking of coppers. I had a hard time finding a store that sold it. But I did find one, and what a better way to retaliate against authority? 3. "Grand Theft Auto III" I could say the GTA series, but really each of the titles are worlds and games unto themselves. This game is what got the 'save our kids' ball rolling. Picking up hookers, shooting FBI officers, and hijacking cars from old ladies. If you have never played this game, you haven't lived. 2. "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" This title sparked even more controversy when it was found out that you could unlock a part of the sime world that allowed you to perform the 'monster with two backs', but you can also change positions. You could argue your studying the Karma Sutra when your girl walks in on that surprise. 1. My number one game is "Manhunt" I don't want to give away to much of this game because it is both extremely playable, fun, and deep with a good story line and excellent graphics. So, I will give of a list of my favorite weapons used in the game: Plastic bag, Barbwire, Sickle, Shard of Glass, Brick, Spiked Bat, Chainsaw. Go out and rent these games tonight! --Think you know of a game that tops, or belongs in my list. Leave a comment and let me know! --Drew

33. What's with Colorado and the Broncos?
Tuesday, 10 October 2006

Sure, John Elway was a great quarterback. But what's with his name and sponsorship carrying so much weight? There's used car dealerships, restaurants, and not to mention tons of sponsors. He even has his own website, dedicated in full, to the loyalist of the loyal. After I watched my beloved Vikings come back to win against the Lions on Sunday, a friend called me to see if I had caught the game. He then asked if I was transforming into a Broncos fan. I responded "I would cheer for the Broncos if they were any good." Of course, the broncos are and have been a decent team. Five Super Bowl appearances is nothing to keep quiet about. But I still and will forever, bleed Purple and Gold. I would have Bronco fans know that over the past 25 years, only one NFL team has had more playoff apperances than the Vikes, (Dallas Cowboys). We also have 4 Super Bowl apperances, and under the iconic Head Coach Bud Grant, won 11 divisional titles in 13 years. The Vikes have a deep and rich franchise history. Metropolitan Stadium, the epitome of football and the elements; the 'Black and Blue' rivalry, the essence of football's physical nature, played out between the Vikes and Bears, the Purple People Eaters, arguably the fiercest defense in the history of the NFL, leading to three Super Bowl appearances. But hold on. I'm going off my rocker here. What's my point? Although the Vikings are the heart and soul for most Minnesota sports fans, we also had the Stars, The Lakers, etc. And currently have the Twins, Timberwolves, Wild, U 0f M, and of course, the Vikings. Colorado has the Broncos, and, well.... the Broncos, but you do have John Elway. And thank god for your economy and local businesses too. --Drew

34. Giving teachers guns is not the answer to school shootings
Thursday, 05 October 2006

In the wake of three recent shootings in schools across the nation, a Wisconsin lawmaker is pushing a radical agenda to the forefront of this national debate. Republican Frank Lasee of Wisconsin believes that teachers should be armed and trained to carry concealed weapons in schools. Although the recent events in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are both tragic and horrific, arming teachers with .38 caliber hand-cannons is not the answer. Lasee points to Thailand and Israel, two countries that allow administrators and guards to carry weapons, as contributing evidence that this works. Lasee believes that having armed guards and or teachers at schools will deter shooters from targeting schools. This scare-tactic is absurd as it is pointless, and will do nothing but further hindering the failing public school system. Look at the attacks in Pennsylvania and Colorado. Both shooters ended up killing themselves before authorities could take them into custody. Columbine ended up with the same result. If the attackers have no fear of dying, how is the deterrent of armed teachers or guards going to scare them? It won't. If anything, it will only increase the violent nature of attacks, and perhaps add another level of animosity between troubled students and teachers. A move towards a totalitarian educational system is absolutely absurd. Instead of handing more guns out, perhaps the government and lawmakers should make it harder for minors to get their hands on guns. Instead of creating a more authoritative and commanding school system, we should employ more counselors and mentors for at-risk teens. It is disturbing, and disappointing to know that lawmakers like Lasee believe that in order to stop school violence we must arm teachers and school administrators. --Drew

35. Cook serves up distateful dish, Killers resuscitate in SNL premiere
Saturday, 30 September 2006

Dane Cook could be the funniest man on earth. Anybody who can use a cashew as a comedic muse is simply genius. Unfortunately, Cook seemed to offer up a cold and bland performance on the premiere of SNL. Cook's opening monologue lacked everything that is Dane. His in your face stage presence was lost on the viewer, and his usually abrasive and satiric comedy gave way to mediocrity. Not all of it was bad, and it was certainly better than watching Carson Daly duff another delivery, but it simply wasn't the Dane Train. Maybe it's because Cook was limited by FCC limitations, but I would like to think that Cook is funny enough to have a great performance without relying on profanity and over the top sexual lingo. The SNL digital short, 'Cubicle Fight', was by far my favorite Cook sketch of the night. On the whole, SNL came out with a strong show to kick off their 32nd season. The Killers provided a much needed lift to the show with genuine and electrifying performances. After seeing this premiere, I'm unsure of Cook's new feature film, Employee of the Month. I enjoyed Cook's supporting role in Waiting, and was chomping at the bit to see Cook with other comedians gone actors in a seemingly all out laugh riot. And if not, then looking at Jessica Simpson for a couple hours is something I can most certainly handle, no matter how bad the movie is. --Drew

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.
