16. Festive fashions

Christmas is coming... or so the stores are telling us by putting our all of their Christmas displays out. I love Christmas. I like getting and giving gifts.

I love the snow... and the cheer and the happy feeling that I get listening to Christmas songs. However, there is one thing that I do not like about the holiday. And that would be....

THE CHRISTMAS SWEATER!

I have yet to find a "fashionable" christmas sweater. That's because every single Christmas sweater I've seen is gaudy and loud. Who buys these sweaters for us? Family member do. Why the torture?

Some of us are stuck, I understand that. Many grandmas and aunts and moms make these bulky shirts or decorate sweatshirts with their glue guns and glitter with good intentions. They spend hours trying to make a cute outfit for us. I'd rather get socks.

So if you've got a holiday sweater that falls into the ugly category e-mail smachuca@nextnc.com. I'd like to see if your sweater is uglier than mine.

17. Madonna says she adopted African boy legally
Wednesday, 18 October 2006

Madonna says she adopted a Malawian boy legally.

The pop singer broke her silence Tuesday, saying in a statement that everything she did while adopting the 1-year-old boy was legal. Her statement came the same day she was united with little David Banda at her London mansion. She said she hopes to make the adoption permanent after an 18-month evaluation period imposed by Malawi authorities.

"We have gone about the adoption procedure according to the law, like anyone else who adopts a child. Reports to the contrary are totally inaccurate," Madonna said in the statement, issued via e-mail.

Madonna said she and her husband began the adoption process "many months prior to our trip to Malawi," but she had not disclosed their intentions because she wished to keep the matter private.

"After learning that there were over 1 million orphans in Malawi, it was my wish to open up our home and help one child escape an extreme life of hardship, poverty and in many cases death, as well as expand our family," Madonna said.

"This was not a decision or commitment that my family or I take lightly," she added.

TIMELINE

  • Last week: Malawi's High Court granted Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie an interim adoption order giving them custody of the boy for 18 months.
  • Monday: David leaves Malawi
  • Tuesday: He is whisked off a British Airways flight on Tuesday and into the arms of a woman who covered his head with a light gray coat and took him into a waiting minivan.

ADOPTION ISSUES

Human rights and child protection groups said they plan to go to court Tuesday to challenge the speedway court decision awarding Madonna and Ritchie temporary custody of the child. The groups said they're concerned child protection regulations may have been swept aside to benefit a singer who has been generous to the impoverished, AIDS-stricken southern African nation.

Justin Dzonzi, a lawyer for a coalition of Malawian human rights and child advocacy organizations, said his group was concerned that no one explained the implications of the adoption to the child's father.

MADONNA'S SIDE

But the boy's father, Yohame Banda, accused the rights groups of being "jealous of my son." The boy's mother died after giving birth, and the Banda -- a farmer -- had put his son in an orphanage.

"What's their interest? I want David to have a bright future, not to live in this poverty," he told The Associated Press in his village, Lipunga, 80 miles from the Malawian capital.

Malawian government officials said they had no objection to the adoption.

18. Guess What I Did!?!
Monday, 09 October 2006

I am feeling cold and ready for a little snow tonight. So... when I think of snow, I think I need some Christmas music. Yes, I did. I played Christmas music. I played it for myself and coworkers. hehe!

I didn't play just any Christmas music ether. I played the Chipmunks Christmas music. Alvin, Simon and Theodore bring back neat little memories of when we were kids and Christmas was still super exciting.

It's never too early for Christmas! yay. I'm rushing off now to work on my Christmas list. woo hoo!

I just saw that Marc Broussard is gonna be at the Fox Theatre in October!!! I'm there. Tickets are under $20. I'm sooo happy. I have very good memories of when I saw him last (except for that annoying, icky band that opened for him, can't remember their slimy name). Here's a picture of Marc  Broussard...--->

Go to www.islandrecords.com/marcbroussard/site/home.las  to listen to his music.

20. Thank goodness!!!
Tuesday, 12 September 2006

Yeah, I really had to breathe a sigh of relief to hear that John Mayer has dumped Jessica Simpson. You heard me right. And when I saw all the entertiainment mags claiming that they were an item, I think I died a little inside.

It really made me think: What could John Mayer see in Jessica Simpson (besides the obvious). They are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum.

I didn't think that John would seriously use that type of publicity to sell his new cd. Or would he? You can make up your own mind. I've decided that John isn't that dumb, and I'm happy that he isn't rolling in the muck that is Jessica Simpson's life.

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
