36. Yay! More Sean Bean
Wednesday, 14 June 2006

Yay! More Sean Bean.I found this article at zap2it.com. If I remember correctly the Hitcher dies. So he will most likely die! AGAIN! I suppose he dies well. Can I please watch one new movie with him in it where he doens't kick the bucket? Please? ugh!

The final casting piece seems to be in place for the upcoming Platinum Dunes and Rogue Pictures remake of "The Hitcher.

According to a variety of online sources, including the reliable folks (on such matters, at least) at Bloody-Disgusting.com, Zachary Knighton has snagged the young male lead in the project, joining Sean Bean ("Silent Hill") and Sophia Bush ("One Tree Hill").

Production on "The Hitcher," helmed by music video veteran Dave Meyers, is just about ready to begin, with producers eying an April 13, 2007 release date.

The original, directed by Robert Harmon, focused on a young man (C. Thomas Howell) who picks up a lunatic (Rutger Hauer), who stalks him and kills a variety of people over the course of 100 minutes.

The remake focuses on a couple (Knighton and Bush) and their unfortunate interactions with the madman (Bean) they meet on the side of the road. There's been speculation (perhaps confirmed by the lateness of the Knighton casting) that the new version, adapted by Eric Bernt and Jake Wade Wall, puts the female lead at the center of the story.

Knighton played one of the leads in FOX's short-lived slacker comedy "Life on a Stick." He's also appeared in several features, including "The Mudge Boy" and "The Prince & Me."

37. Whatever happened to Black Love Day?
-

Question: Sure, it has a pledge, a slogan (Nya Akoma, meaning “Get a heart; be patient!”), and colors (black, the blend of all colors; and purple for spirituality).

There’s even an edict that observers perform five specific loving acts within 24 hours (for the self; the creator; the black family; within the black community; and for the black race).

Whites are supposed to show “love in action toward blacks, atonement or introspection of their racial attitudes.”

But how many people really celebrate Black Love Day on Feb. 13?

Ayo Handy Kendi came up with the Valentine’s Day alternative in 1993. While the day is recognized by mayoral proclamation in Washington, what about elsewhere?

asap asked Kendi and Angelique Shofar, a columnist for AOL Black Voices and the host of the radio show Africa Meets Africa in Washington, about the holiday’s progress.

———

SHOFAR
It’s been a little stagnant, according to Shofar.

She says there was a celebration in D.C. Tuesday night, but thought weather was going to limit attendance. She says many people still don’t know about Black Love Day, mainly because of marketing.

“I think mainstream needs to pick it up,” she says. “More needs to be written up, bigger celebrations should take place, African American magazines need to write about it. Maybe one of the problems is it’s a one day thing, overshadowed by Valentine’s Day. Maybe we should celebrate the entire month or year.”

———

KENDI
Observances are getting better each year, Kendi says.

She points out that Black Love Day is a baby compared to Kwanzaa, created in 1966, and there are millions of people who have no idea what the December holiday is about.

Kendi says she wasn’t able to do much public relations this year, but she received calls from people in New York and Tacoma, Wash., inquiring about Black Love Day. She says some people even created Black Love Day cards, posters, and kits with vegan chocolate.

“It’s a different type of celebration,” she says. “It requires you to do something, which in our society that likes to mass-package love concepts — giving the perfect gift seems very simple to do — to give of oneself takes a little more effort.”

38. Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn have split
-

"The Break Up" costars have broken up.

People magazine reports on its Web site that Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn are no longer a couple.

"Jennifer and Vince mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be good friends today," said representatives Stephen Huvane and John Pisani, according to People.com, in a story posted Tuesday.

Their representatives said the former co-stars decided to end their romance after Aniston visited Vaughn in London in October.

The actors met while filming "The Break-Up" in 2005. Reports of a romance quickly swirled, but the two initially said they were simply friends.

Former heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick was found dead in a church courtyard in Jamaica on Saturday in a suspected homicide.

Berbick, who was believed to be 52, was the last boxer to fight Muhammad Ali. He lost his heavyweight title to Mike Tyson.

Berbick's body was discovered about 6:30 a.m. in his hometown parish of Portland, with chop wounds to his head, police said.

Police have no word yet on what kind of weapon was used or how many people were involved in Berbick's death.

40. Father of Madonna's adopted son talks
-

He just wants his son to have a better life.

The father of the 13-month-old boy who Madonna wants to adopt is speaking out. Yohane Banda told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he's upset with human rights groups who are challenging the pop star's adoption. Banda said he gave the boy up for adoption because he was too poor to care for him after the boy's mother died of childbirth complications.

"Where were these people when David was struggling in the orphanage? These so-called human rights groups should leave my baby alone," he said. "As father I have OKed this, I have no problem. The village has no problem. Who are they to cause trouble? Please let them stop."

Banda countersigned the boy's adoption papers, also signed by Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie.

The couple, who had been married for over 10 years, had two other sons who died in infancy from malaria.

"I was alone with a baby. I had no money. I couldn't buy him milk. That's why I surrendered him to the orphanage," said Banda.

"Orphanage life is no good. We leave kids there because we can't look after them properly ourselves. Now my son has been taken by a kindhearted woman, these people want to bring him back to the orphanage," said Banda, standing in his small garden of onions and tomatoes.

He said Madonna and Ritchie promised him nothing apart from "love and care for my David."

CHALLENGE

The Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema compared Madonna's taking custody of David to a "kidnapping" and called for clearer international rules, according to his spokesman, confirming accounts of his remarks in Italian media.

The Human Rights Consultative Committee, a coalition of 67 organizations, launched a legal challenge on Tuesday. Children's advocates in Malawi have stressed they are not opposed to Madonna adopting David, but want to ensure rules meant to protect children aren't ignored.

MADONNA'S SIDE

"Madonna and her husband has broken no laws as far as government is concerned. They have followed all the legal steps," Penston Kilembe, director of Child Welfare Services in Malawi's Ministry of Gender, Child Welfare and Community Services, said.

In a statement last week, the British development group ActionAid lauded Madonna for helping David and her wider projects for AIDS orphans in Malawi.

Madonna said in a statement Tuesday: "We have gone about the adoption procedure according to the law like anyone else who adopts a child. Reports to the contrary are totally inaccurate."
