Fort Collins-based band monofog is raw, like garage rock. But the quartet has come out of the garage.
And they’re out with a second album that is just as intense as the foursome’s live act. “Runner,” mixes together edgy sounds and lyrics that will no doubt be embraced by monofog’s small but growing following in Colorado.
“I guess we’re indie rock by definition,” lead singer Hayley Helmericks said. Monofog plays host to a CD release party on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Aggie. Helmericks’ sings with a low-toned, angry, but still sexy vibe.
“Lyrics are really my domain,” Helmericks said. “A lot (of the lyrics are) what’s going on in the world and how that influences or strikes me and sticks with me. Emotions and relationships are also a source of inspiration. I feel like I am a very conscious person, who’s aware of the state of the world, and so my opinions definitely sneak into the songs.”
With Douglas Spencer on guitar, David Yob on bass, and drummer Lucas Rouge, monofog is, as Helmericks said, “loud rock ’n’ roll. It’s dark, dance-y and weird at times.”
Monofog frequently played with local favorites Matson Jones and toured last year with I Am Electric from Salt Lake City.
“I hope that when (the audience) sees us they feel that we’re honest and sincere people and take away a well-rounded rock ’n’ roll experience,” Helmericks said. “We just want to create a good atmosphere for people to feel comfortable to come and rock out.”
With a lengthy summer tour in the works, the band will have an opportunity to do just that.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
