This is one of the paintings that will be on display at the new Bas Bleu art exhibit “Circulation Natural.”

Finding real nature in Fort Collins isn’t as easy as most residents would think, according to artist David Linder.
“As a culture, we’re getting so far away from what real natural spaces are,” Linder said. “Our experience with nature is not really natural — the experience is already packaged for us. Someone created it for us.”
Linder, a recent graduate of Colorado State University’s Master in Fine Arts program, has created his own response to the shift from existing open spaces to pre-planned community parks and “natural” areas.
“I am working on conceptual installations that work to question and challenge our human experience with the natural world,” Linder said. “A number of artists such as myself are trying to bring people into an experience with nature.”
Linder’s sculptures, along with paintings by fellow graduate J.J. Edwards, will be featured at an exhibit called “Circulation Natural” at Bas Bleu Theatre in Fort Collins.
Linder’s work in the “Circulation Natural” show is composed of many different elements designed to be seen as a whole piece. Linder said an element of his piece features a cage, which symbolizes the notion of unavailable space, untouchable to humans.
When looking at Edward’s work, you’ll notice that circles are a predominant theme. Simply put, Edwards was exploring the relationship between human biology and psychology.
She hopes her paintings “get to people on their different conscious levels.” Someone might look at a painting and just go, “Ah, some circles.” But for someone else, the shapes might inspire them to reflect on a memory or conversation, Edwards said.
The audience will find the work of the two artists to be accessible and visually appealing, said newly appointed Bas Bleu co-curator Sarah Vaeth. Vaeth, along with Suzanne Farris, will take the reins of the curatorial direction of the theater with the opening of this show.
“It’s really ambitious work and it’s in a really good venue for more intellectual work,” Vaeth said.
Linder, a five-year Fort Collins resident, said he often feels like an observer while walking the trails in the national parks and walking through the city parks. Linder said city residents need to be reminded of what is natural.
“Once you’ve defined a space, you can’t define it again,” Linder said. “We have to always be willing to take a step back and really observe what (space) we’re changing and (understand) what kind of experience we are trying to offer to people.”

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
