LOS ANGELES — Carey Hart celebrated his 18th birthday by getting a tattoo of a skull with his old race number (111) and flames shooting out the back.
Looking back, maybe it wasn’t the best idea.
“My first tattoo was pretty bad,” Hart says. “It was a horrible, horrible tattoo. I actually ended up covering it up. But most people’s first tattoos aren’t the greatest.” The bad ink certainly didn’t stop him from getting more.
While the X Games is filled with athletes adorned in tattoos -- ink is a big part of the culture -- Hart stands out. The motocross rider figures he’s about 70 percent covered, with only his legs and his head still bare.
Of course, it’s not surprising considering Hart used to draw on his arms as an elementary school student. And while some people get ink just because they think it looks cool, most of Hart’s, including a matching one with his wife, pop star Pink, and others that honor his father and grandfather, have a deeper meaning.
“A lot of it is family-related and I live in Vegas, so there’s a lot of Vegas-influenced tattoos on me,” says Hart, the first motocross rider to complete a backflip in competition. “I like to get meaningful tattoos.”
How big is Hart into tattoos? Well, he co-owns Hart & Huntington Tattoo Co. in Las Vegas, which became the first casino tattoo parlor (it’s inside the Palms), and has a reality TV show on A&E called “Inked,” which is about life at his shop.
asap got a got a close-up look at some of Hart’s ink just before the start of this year’s X Games and asked him to run down some of his favorites. Check it out:

The meaning: Hart was close to his grandfather, Tom Hart, and got this one shortly after his death three months ago. He went with a shamrock because his grandfather was Irish. ——— What: Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Where: Inside Hart’s left arm. The meaning: One of several Vegas-themed tats Hart has in homage to his hometown. He also has roulette wheels and the new strip on his left sleeve, and the old strip on his stomach and ribs. ——— What: A sacred heart, a flaming face and the wings of an angel mixed into a big collage of tats. Where: Hart’s back. The meaning: This one is a combination of numerous tattoos -- with numerous meanings -- that form one big mural across Hart’s entire back. ——— John Marshall is asap’s Denver-based sports writer, in Los Angeles to cover the X Games. | Only registered users can write comments. | | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
