Rist Canyon Ride
Colorado Cycling Fesitval's Rist Canyon Ride Info
If cruising around the flat streets of Fort Collins on your bike is getting humdrum, turn west and try a spin through Rist Canyon this weekend.

The inaugural Colorado Cycling Festival’s Rist Canyon Road Ride pits riders from across the state against the inclines of Rist Canyon for a friendly 50-mile tour. It has been organized to highlight northern Colorado, raise funds for the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department and gather donated bikes for the Boys & Girls clubs of Larimer and Weld counties.

THE RIDE
Organizers hope to establish the Road Ride as one of the state’s premiere cycling events for bikers of all skill levels.

The ride leaves between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, from Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins.

It climbs north through Rist Canyon more than 8,000 feet in about 9.5 miles to Stove Prairie. The route then turns south through Masonville, heads around the south end of Horsetooth Reservoir, goes by Dixon Reservior and returns at Hughes Stadium for a post-ride barbecue and entertainment. There will be rider support along the route, with two stops for drinks and food, sponsored by Lee’s Cyclery.

BIKES, BREWS AND MUSIC, TOO

The Road Ride offers additional events for gearheads on Friday, Aug. 11. These include a tour of five area breweries and a free concert in Old Town Square.

The brewery tour bus departs Old Town at 2:45 p.m. and will take patrons to New Belgium, O’Dell, Fort Collins Brewery, Anheuser-Busch and CooperSmith’s.

Pre-registration is required, go to www.coloradocyclingfestival.com for details.

The concert starts at 6 p.m. Friday night, where patrons can mingle with the Trek VW Cycling Team and check out Trek products on display.

WHO BENEFITS?

The Road Ride was established mainly as a benefit for the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, according to a release.

“The department receives no tax dollars for its activities and relies on the support of area residents and visitors to protect this beautiful area,” said ride founder Charles Weinbeck.

A bike donation drive will be held by Lee’s Cyclery and the Northern Colorado Sports Commission, to benefit the Boys & Girls clubs of Larimer and Weld counties. Patrons can bring bikes to donate, which will be tuned up and given to youths who currently don’t have bikes.

Colorado Cycling Festival co-founder Doug Balzer said the group is happy to get the chance to support and draw attention to the volunteer fire department through the event.

He said the group supports “their efforts to create a situation where everyone wins, including the department, Rist Canyon residents, cyclists, area nonprofits and those they serve, and the entire northern Colorado economy.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
