It is against the law to discriminate against an employee or applicant based of their sex in relation to hiring, termination, promotion, compensation and job training.

According to The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, sexual harassment includes any sexual advances, requests for sexual favors and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that implicitly affects an individual’s employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual’s work performance, or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment.

Here are some steps to follow if you feel you are being discriminated or harassed because of your sex:

1. Prevention is the best tactic in fighting harassment and discrimination. Employers should communicate policies to employees and policies should be readily available.

2. Approach the individual directly, if the situation can be worked out between the two of you. Be firm, but do not take a confrontational approach.

3. Review your company’s policy for guidelines.

4. Inform your supervisor immediately or, if you are uncomfortable with that person, contact the human resources director. The HR director should assist you in taking appropriate measures.
