It's sleek. It's new. It's here. Is it worth it?

After years of rumors and delays, consumers can now get their hands on Microsoft's Windows Vista, a streamlined PC operating system with a focus on enhancing and organizing personal multimedia.

While the flashy interface is light years ahead of Windows 95 — well, at least 12 years — many users believe Vista isn't quite ready for prime-time.

After taking in Vista, Derrik J. Lang is conflicted on whether he loves it or loathes it. The reasons:

___

FIVE REASONS TO LOVE IT

1. Multimultimedia. The thrust of Vista seems to be able to efficiently play, record, copy, edit or whatever you want to do to your personal media. Videos play with ease with Microsoft Media Player 11. Photos seamlessly pop up with Photo Gallery. And they're organized logically, harnessing meta tags like you'd find in a blog search.

2. Never lose a file again. We've all been there: scouring through folders looking for those elusive MP3s or photos. Vista changes all that with an integrated search that's actually quick and easy to use. One such trick: searches — say you're looking for all of your Rolling Stones MP3s — can be saved for later reference as virtual folders without having to physically move Mick and company.

3. Gadgets. Check the date. Tell time. Do math. You'll never know what you did without these handy dandy lil' personalized drag-and-drop tools before Vista. Yes, the gadgets are another of Vista's features seemingly lifted from Mac OS X — where a similar element is called widgets — but that doesn't mean they don't rock. They do.

4. Gaming connectivity. Vista was designed to work better at playing graphically involved, high-definition games than its predecessors — especially on high-end machines with its Aero graphics system. And the disconnect between gamers on Windows and the Xbox 360 console, both created by Microsoft, doesn't need to exist any longer. Users of both systems can compete against each other.

5. Supercharged and supersmart. Need more power? Vista makes your hardware be the best it can be. With Windows ReadyBoost, Vista intuitively borrows RAM from connected USB drives, swapping flash memory when you need it most. And the Windows ReadyDrive can boost performance, battery life and reliability by harnessing built-in flash capabilities.

___

FIVE REASONS TO LOATHE IT

1. Too many versions. So let's say you've decided you want Windows Vista. Congratulations. That's like saying you want beef for dinner. What part of the cow do you want? How do you want it cooked? Marinated or dry-rubbed? You see, Windows Vista comes in five editions: Ultimate, Home Premium, Home Basic, Business and Enterprise. Each has its own bells, whistles and price tag. Confusing!

2. Endless upgrades. As with any PC operating system upgrade — not that there are that many — moving to Vista will entail searching for drivers for just about everything connected to (and some stuff inside) of your computer as well as troubleshooting glitches with older programs that may not be "Windows Vista Certified."

3. Security overkill. OK, OK. So Microsoft probably had good intentions by making this version of Windows so darn secure. Unfortunately, the user experience is a casualty of war in Microsoft's battle against hackers, bugs and spyware insurgents. Installing software — even if it's not spyware or something similarly naughty — has become even more of a chore.

4. Hardware glutton. The sad truth is your current machine might not be able to handle Vista, especially if you want to be wowed by the awesomeness of the three-dimensional Aero graphics system. (You can test your computer here: http://tinyurl.com/2kcw3b .) If Microsoft truly desired to create an operating system for the masses, they could. But Vista's steep technical requirements will probably leave many feeling abandoned.

5. What's new? If you've ever used Mac OS X, Vista will feel familiar. Most of the new features, such as gadgets and an organizational tool called Sidebar, seem like they were replicated from OS X, which is a shame, since Apple is unveiling a newer version of its interface, called Leopard, later this year. Here, kitty, kitty.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
