Announcing the front-runners for the unofficial title:
Song of Summer, 2006.

Prizes for this auspicious honor? Beyond the obvious monetary rewards, Song of Summer finalists can rest easy knowing that they were there when thousands, nay, MILLIONS of hot sweaty American youth acquired various rites of passage badges.

Register your vote by cranking the stereo when your favorite comes on and taking a long pull off the mojito in your hand, and the winner will be telepathically revealed to you in a sun-burnt hangover-induced haze.

Song: “Promiscuous”
By: Nelly Furtado and Timbaland
Why? Flirty, dirty and with a can’t-shake-it-loose chorus. Damn, it’s hot in herre! If this is being bad, we don’t want to be good.
———
Song: “Hotel Song”
By: Regina Spektor
Why? Pretty and poppy, this surreal track innocently skips along to lyrics about orca whales, cocaine and, most devastatingly, the absence of love. Custom-made for a long, introspective summer drive away from the one you can’t quite let go but know you should.
———
Song: “Bossy”
By: Kelis featuring Too $hort
Why? She augmented her milkshake with an 808 drum machine, a subtle shift away from women’s (sl)easiest path to empowerment and toward mastering the machines that make us go bump in the night. And she’s got hip-hop’s original pimp slinging rhymes for her. The turntables have, um, turned.
———
Song: “Hips Don’t Lie”
By: Shakira featuring Wyclef Jean
Why? What’s summer without a Latin beat? Shakira and former Fugee Wyclef Jean make us all wish we could speak Spanish with these sizzling rhythms. If only we could all move like we “come from Colombia.”
———
Song: “Crazy”
By: Gnarls Barkley
Why? Melancholic mayhem from Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse that epitomizes our torn allegiance to current events and the pursuit of pop. This is summertime blues.
———
Song: “We’re All In This Together”
By: “High School Musical” Cast
Why? This rousing marching band anthem from the shockingly popular Disney Channel made-for-TV movie is this summer’s “Summer Nights.”
———
Song: “Ain’t No Other Man”
By: Christina Aguilera
Why? Xtina does the blues! Or at least a pumpin’ jazz-infused girl power declaration that sorta sounds like the blues. Oh, just sing it, sister.
———
Song: “Not Ready To Make Nice.”
By: The Dixie Chicks
Why? Love em’ or hate em’ -- they have put out an in-your-face, unapologetic song. And it’s so catchy, even Bill O’Reilly likes it.
———
Song: “Smile”
By: Lily Allen
Why? Sway along to the queen of MySpace. The impish vocals of Brit star Lily Allen is littered with irresistible glottal stops and cheeky confidence, tripping over a breezy ska-like track.
———
Song: “Cocaina”
By: Busta Rhymes featuring Marsha of Floetry
Why? An ever-so-delicate tinkling piano adds both whimsy and menace to Rhymes’ classic braggadocio. And when the meandering singing takes over at the end, things get both reflective and bright enough to form a trunk-thumping summer hit.
———
Song: “Brand New Girlfriend”
By: Steve Holy
Why? It starts out like your typical country song about the woman what done you wrong -- a piano plays in the background as Holy forlornly details how she told him they should take a break. Then, in an instant, he switches gears and gleefully proclaims that the high road involves dumping her and finding someone new. And that someone new? Well, she’s a whole lot more fun than the old one because she brings him beer, doesn’t mind that he leaves the toilet seat up and tolerates his rowdy friends.
———
Song: “Snap Yo Fingers”
By: Lil Jon featuring E40 and Sean Paul of Youngbloodz
Why? One of the few beats this summer potent enough to cut through whatever chemical-induced haze you’re working with. And if you’re sober enough to understand the words, Lil John never disappoints with his so-dumb-they’re-genius lyrics.
———
Song: “Sexyback”
By: Justin Timberlake
Why: The sleazy synths on this track are more dangerously delicious than a roofied margarita. Timbaland will have you shouting “Take ’em to the chorus” through the sunroof of your friend’s Nissan Sentra. A jam you can hear in 20 Burger King dining rooms and never get tired of.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
