Yes, it’s a wine tasting, with fancy food, music and an auction, but the Greeley Philharmonic prefers to think of its Wines of Note as a party and not some snooty black-tie event.

The wine-tasting event, the Philharmonic’s biggest fund-raiser of the year, really is for those who have only drank wine from a box or think wine coolers go well with a $45 steak as much as it is for those who have cellars with bottles of wine that are older than King George III.

After all, 500 people can’t be wrong. That’s how many came to the wine tasting, er, party last year, and Philharmonic officials are expecting more this year.
“It really is a fun party,” said Jeannette Kolokoff, executive director of the Philharmonic. “That’s how we prefer to think of it.”

The hors d’oeuvres are plentiful enough to be dinner, after all, so no need to grab a cheeseburger before you go in. A smaller group from the jazz band Kream of the Krop plays as well as a couple jazz musicians from the Philharmonic, so the music isn’t just a single violin playing a concerto from the 1400s. And vendors won’t roll their eyes if you don’t know how to, say, swish the wine around just so. They’re there to show you how to taste wine. Here’s a hint: Guzzling isn’t the right way.

“There’s a person at each table to teach you how to taste it,” Kolokoff said. “They are there to answer your questions.”

For the first time, too, there will be a live auction, led by Lee Korins, a well-known auctioneer with a thick New York accent who likes to get a bit rowdy.

There will be more than 100 wines available. This may be a party, but you might not want to drink them all.

Ninth Annual Wines of Note
The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra’s biggest fund-raiser of the year will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Centennial Village in Greeley.
Tickets are $35 per person in advance or $40 at the door and may be purchased at Westlake Wine and Spirits, 2024 35th Ave., Greeley or by calling the philharmonic at 356.6406.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
