Recently, I was reminded that no matter how busy life is, a smile takes no time at all. I was driving into work the other day when I got stopped at a red light. For no particular reason, I glanced at the car to my right. At the exact same time, the driver of that car happened to glance over at me. What could have been a brief moment of awkwardness turned into a lighthearted reminder not to take things so seriously.
We both smiled at each other and laughed a little. A few seconds later, the light turned green and we were both back to wherever our busy lives were taking us. But it got me thinking. Just how often do we miss opportunities to smile at a stranger in passing? I know too often I get wrapped up in the daily drudge. Is it possible for people to simple forget to smile from time to time? After all, we have all heard it takes less muscles to smile than frown anyway.
I'm not suggesting that everyone should be Suzy Sunshine and greet every person in sight with open arms. What I am saying is as human beings, we crave interaction with others and a random smile can easily brighten someone else's day.
Now I can only remember this during rush hour.

I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
