Where To Get Away From It All
Valentine's Day To-Do's

WHERE TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL

OUTDOORS AND RUSTIC:
The yurts at Never Summer Nordic, Inc., offer roughing it camping, but with a wood stove and an outhouse — what more do you need? Yurts are circular, tent-like canvas and wood structures built high on a wood deck.

There are seven of these backcountry shelters in the Never Summer system, each a different ski- or snowshoe-in distance from the trailhead in the Colorado State Forest State Park near Cameron Pass and two miles west of Gould. Drive time from Fort Collins is about two hours.

Winter rates for yurts in the Never Summer system are $110 per night for Friday-Sunday, $90 per night on weekdays. For reservations, call 970.723.4070,

Other ways to retreat
If roughing it in the wilderness is not your thing, there’s plenty of other romantic retreats. From a relaxing refuge right in town or star treatment to the hilt, northern Colorado has plenty of opportunities:

In town:
Need a break, but don’t want to mess with the drive? Local bed and breakfasts will make you feel like you are on an amazing vacation and forget you are still in town.

Greg Belcher, owner of The Edwards House Bed & Breakfast, 402 W. Mountain Ave., Fort Collins, said he has local guests stay repeatedly for various special occasions.

“It keeps that spark and romance in their lives and refreshes them,” he said. “It’s a nice divergence when you take time away to enjoy each other and not worry who’s going to shovel the walks.”

The Edwards House is a restored historic Victorian house near Old Town. Each of the eight rooms is charming and inviting, with prices ranging from $140-$160 per night. Every night wine and cheese is served in the parlor room. Complementary champagne, chocolate and roses are available for special occasions. Plus, you might even meet the famous mascot, Tater Tot, a Norfolk terrier.

Pampered Paradise:
Sometimes it’s nice to go all out — to live like royalty — even for just one weekend.

The famous Stanley Hotel, 333 Wonderview Ave., in Estes Park offers a variety of special romantic packages.

The Valentine’s special is offered the weekend before and after Valentine’s Day and includes a room, dinner for two, a historical tour for two, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries for $325 per night.

Heather Scott, director of guest services at The Stanley Hotel, encourages people to book early.

Other romantic packages that are available year-round offer everything from souvenir champagne flutes to massages for two and range from $300-$700 per night. The Stanley Hotel specializes in special occasions.

“It just breathes romance. Whether it’s because of the historic charm or majestic mountains, the location brings it out in people,” Scott said.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
