Q: A lot of the fitness classes at my gym are at 5 p.m. — right after work. I don’t have time to eat dinner before I go. What should I eat before I go to get an energy boost?
Karen, Fort Collins
A: Although I’m in no way supposed to give nutrition advice, because it is beyond my scope of practice, I will give you something I tell many of my clients: If you are eating sensibly — and that means eating 5-6 small (off of a six inch plate and portions the size of the top of your fist) meals a day — then you should be eating a small snack meal around 3 p.m.
Small snacks include fruits and vegetables (salads, apples, melon, etc). Drinking stupid (energy sapping) carbo drinks are a waste of time, money and really don’t give an adequate boost to your energy throughout your workout. Sometimes it can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, which is not good if you are trying to sustain a vigorous workout.
A snack should provide the adequate energy you need to get you through your workout. It will have digested by 5 p.m. for your fitness class.
You may not get an actual boost (like a shot-of-espresso boost), but you won’t feel like you want to take a nap either. This is far better than the alternative.
Keep going to the gym and feel great doing it.
If you feel you need more guidance in this area, consult with a licensed nutritionist or registered dietician for a complete meal plan.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
