Ron Scott, as a representative for High Country Beverage (seen here at Sullivan’s in Fort Collins), gets a kick out of meeting new people when he goes into a bar as the “beer guy.”
|
Ron Scott didn’t dream about being the beer guy. In fact, he’s not even a big drinker. It more or less just happened.
“It’s the right fit,” said the 27-year-old of Greeley. “I want to be here. If I work hard, eventually I’ll move up in the company and make it more of a career than a job.”
Scott has already moved up from being a driver to an on-premise representative for High Country Beverage in Loveland. The company distributes about 25 brands of beverages, including Coors products, around northern Colorado. Scott works with about 75 bars and restaurants in Fort Collins.
He usually starts his day at the office around 7:30 a.m. From there, he’ll head out and make 15-20 stops throughout the day.
“A lot of timing is involved,” he said. “Some bars aren’t open until the afternoon and others open earlier if they serve lunch.”
His job is to sell the beer to retailers and help with any promotions. Sometimes this involves hanging or taking down neon signs and other banners. Other times it involves introducing new opportunities or products.
“Whether I’m out doing promotions or wheeling in a keg of beer, people tell me I’ve got the best job in the world,” he said.
The reality though is it can be a lot harder than it looks.
“There’s a lot of competition, which makes it tough,” Scott said.
But Scott is no stranger to competition. The former University of Northern Colorado fullback, who went to high school in Windsor, has played sports his entire life.
When he graduated college with a degree in communications, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He got his foot in the door with another distributor as a driver.
Then he took another job for a short time until joining the High Country Beverage staff.
“There seemed to be more opportunity to move up,” Scott said.
You may not see Scott chugging beers in the bars every night of the week, but he has at least tried all of the products he sells.
“It helps to have at least some drinking ability,” he said.

IN HIS WORDS
What makes this job challenging? The competition. You are always trying to stay one step ahead of your competition. In Fort Collins you have to compete with the local brews that everyone likes because they are brewed in Fort Collins.
Did you ever think in a million years you’d work here? No. I’m not much of a drinker in general. I’ve never been the type who likes to go out a lot, maybe once or twice a week. It does get me out more. I like it. I get paid to go out and hang out in bars, so it’s kind of cool.
If you weren’t doing this, what would you do? Sit on a beach in Jamaica. I was just in Jamaica and would like to go back there.
Name one thing in your life that really prepared you for your job. Sports. I played football in college— even high school sports. I’ve been doing sports since I was eight years old. They give you that competitive drive and teach you what teams are all about. They teach you that you are not always going to win. You’re going to lose. They give you good life lessons.
What’s the biggest payoff in your job? I’d say the response you get from customers. You hear, “Hey, it’s the Coors guy.” They are all excited to see you when you go places.
What do you do when you’re not at work? Spend time with my wife. We don’t have any kids. I just like being with her, playing guitar or playing video games. Those are pretty much the three things I do.
Family? I’m definitely married. I am really close to my family. My parents are in Windsor and my sister is in Fort Collins. We still get together every Sunday for dinner. My dad was my best man in my wedding.
Favorite TV shows. “Rob and Big”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “South Park” and “Dawson’s Creek.”
Movies. “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Star Wars,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Super Troopers,” “Spinal Tap” and “Anchorman.” I like pretty much anything with one liners.
Books. “Harry Potter” and “Into the Wild.”
What Web sites do you have bookmarked? Myspace, The White Stripes and the NFL Web site.
Where do you play? Barleycorns in Greeley. It’s close to my house.
Go out to eat? Old Chicago’s.
Favorite spot? My favorite spot is probably San Diego.
Makes you get out of bed in the morning? I’m pretty competitive. I want to get out of bed to take the next step to gain ground so that I’m doing my best for my company.
What impress you? People in general. Everyone is so different; you’d never run into same person twice, which is nice.
Things that don’t. Probably what doesn’t impress me is when people try to pretend to be something they’re not or judge you.
How do young/new employees get ahead? Just working hard and being reliable. A lot of people think it’s an easy job, but it’s not. Sticking with it is big. It gets easier as you go along.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done while at work? That’s hard. When I was a driver, I’d forget my wheeler everywhere. When I would down stack the beer, then realize it. I would have to either put it all back on the truck or ask if the client could watch it while I went to get the wheeler.
Smartest? That’s hard too. Remembered my wheeler. I don’t know. I would say I don’t know. I don’t have answer.
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve ever done to make money? I worked in mill place in Windsor that built trusses for houses. I’m not very handy with tools. A guy got his finger chopped off with a saw and they kind of wanted me to do his job. I didn’t want to run the saw, so I was only there for about three weeks.
Any interesting anecdotes? A life lesson to live by in my opinion is to be honest and friendly to everybody. I don’t want to judge anyone too quickly. That goes for at work and life in general.
What do you do during your breaks? Just relax. If I do take a little break, I’ll hang out, grab a bite to eat or sit and talk to people. I go into a bar and sit and talk to the bartender or customers for a couple more minutes. Sports are always easy conversations.
What’s one thing about your job you would do, even if you weren’t paid to do it? Just go out.
Are you the boss? Do you think you should be? No. I don’t think I’d ever want to do my immediate boss’s job. He’s got all the tools to do it. He’s got a lot of responsibility. I’m still learning my job. I don’t know if I’d want to learn his.
Pets? No, but I really want a dog. We just haven’t gotten one yet.
What’s the one thing you wish you could do on the job that you can’t right now? Sell more beer. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
