Q: I have never been skinny, but never overweight either. I had my last child at 42. I lost all of the weight but then I lost a family member, went into a funk, got divorced, and I calculate that I am now 40 pounds overweight.
I have quit drinking alcohol, I watch my diet, and I now walk 30 minutes a day up and down steep hills. Is this enough? I have been at it 10 days with no results.
Please help. If there is anyone who deserves help — I do. Someone said my thyroid could be the cause, but when I last checked the doctor said it was OK.
My herbalist has been saying for about three years that my thyroid is not working. Any suggestions? I can’t stand being fat!
Rebecca
A: I don’t understand why you would expect to see results after ONLY 10 days of doing anything.
Do you think that after 10 days of going to tractor-trailer driving school you would learn how to properly drive a tractor trailer and be road worthy? The results equal the effort. Let’s say you dropped out of driving school after days and decided to go back two months later and then dropped out again. Do you think you would get the desired results, i.e. a tractor-trailer drivers license? No, you wouldn’t.
The same thing goes for fat loss and fitness results.
Consistency and frequency of a workout, with an emphasis on the word “work” is what creates an environment for results.
Tell your herbalist that he’s a friggin’ idiot and that the reason why your furnace isn’t working so well is because you’re more likely to be lean mass deficient (meaning you don’t have the muscle you are supposed to have). That is why you are not losing fat.
You need to build muscle to create a bigger furnace to burn more fuel.
The concept is not a difficult one to grasp: The bigger the engine, the more gas it burns.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
