Ramping up for this years Oscar, and on the tail-end of watching a Peter O'toole interview, it got me wondering. Are there any young actors who are actually any good? Or is it just movies that suck these days, hence offering lame roles? If you watched Peter O'toole on Leno the other night, you know what I mean. Besides being one of the best male actors of our time, and kicking ass in almost everything he's in, O'toole gave a unbelievable interview that was just as much intellectual as entertaining. But people like Will Ferrel can't do much more but stay in a character when they do interviews, and although they are usually type-casted for certain roles, when they do occaisionally step out of their bounds, they suck.
I guess the problem probably is popular culture. Romances that blow, and romantic comedies that blow harder, intermixed with Eddie Murphy movies like Norbit, and faux movies like Epic movie, and Date Movie. Of course you can always fall back on great horror movies being made these days. The Hitcher, Hills Have Eyes, Paris Hilton in a House of Wax remake, definately belongs with the clasics, right? But, you argue, I'm only looking at the junk movies, and terrible actors. Of course Jessica Simpson isn't going to get an Oscar nod for Employee of the Month. And sure, Will Ferrel is funny in his own right, but Talledegah Nights is a comedic tour de force, not.
There is hope out there though. Dicaprio is 50/50 for me. He rocked in the Departed, and has had some great acting efforts (What's eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries, etc.) But you can't tell me you bought that South American accent in blood diamonds. I mean the movie was good, but shoot. Titanic, although extremely popular, certainly wasn't a stunning acting performance if you ask me.
How about Forest Whittaker in Last King of Scotland, now here is a dude that can act! If he doesn't get the nod, I will be disappointed.
Anyways, the next time you go to the movie store looking for a romance, check out Woody Allen's work. Manhattan, Annie Hall, even Match Point was good. If you want a comedy, go with Steve Martin in the Jerk, or check out Peter Sellers to see how multi-character acting is really done in movies like Dr. Strangelove or The Mouse that Roared. Hey but at least we can count on the up and coming Mexican directors to give us some great flicks. If you thought Babel was good, then you'll be blown away by 21 grams and Amores Perros, his first two flicks.

What is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.
