Politics turn hilarious with the gang from Capitol Steps.

Capitol Steps is a comedic troupe constructed of former Congressional staffers that travels across the country serving up political parodies that satirize the very people and places that once employed them.

They call themselves the group that “puts the mock in democracy,” and the show spares no one and leaves no issue untouched.

Most of the cast members have worked in Washington, D.C., on Capitol Hill which has proven to help create new parody material and lyrics that coincide with popular American Songs.

The audience can look forward to 30 songs and skits that range from Dick Cheney rapping to President George W. Bush belting out show tunes, a Mel Gibson apology and psychotic astronauts. The show is fast paced and will cover anything in the headlines. Capitol Steps is suitable for all ages and has performed on some of the most prominent television shows.

Elaina Newport, a founder, writer, producer and performer for Capitol Steps, talks about what it’s like to appear on shows like “Good Morning America,” “20/20,” “and “Entertainment Tonight.” She said although it’s rewarding to be so well known, “It’s terrifying, especially the morning shows.” She added that “Comedy at three in the morning is like chocolate at breakfast.”

The show has played at venues all over the country and six of the last seven presidents have joined the audiences.  President Bush stated, “The Capitol Steps makes it easier to leave public office.”

According to its Web site, the troupe was founded in December of 1981 when three staffers for Sen. Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party.

They decided to dig into the headlines for the day and create song parodies and skits.
During the past 25 years, Capitol Steps has recorded 26 albums and has been featured in three national specials for public television.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
