Dustin Broes has been practicing his driving-in-reverse technique on the homemade motocross track in his backyard.
That must be a strange sight. But Broes isn’t just goofing around trying to hone his James Bond driving skills.
The reverse driving, Broes said, allows him to “cause the most damage” to the front end of competitor vehicles in demolition derbies. And that’s key, because damage to the back end won’t knock them out of the race.
“We’ve been practicing,” the 19-year-old Broes said. “You drive mostly in reverse and try to get good (at understanding) how the car will handle.”
The car, a $200 1985 Honda CRX a friend’s father found in Denver, will have Broes in the driver’s seat and the other members of the Super Cuts in Fort Collins team cheering on the sidelines March 16-17. Broes will be competing in the small-car class at the Demolition Derby at the Budweiser Center in Loveland.
“The car has weaknesses, but it’s nimble and fast — that’s its upside,” Broes said. “Its weakness is its weak structure.”
While this is Broes’ first derby, the Berthoud teen has had a lot of practice behind the wheel.
“My friend asked if I wanted to be the driver in a derby and I thought it’d be fun,” Broes said. “We (Broes and friends) inherit free, beat-up cars and jump them in the homemade motocross in the backyard.”
The derby, according to Broes, consists of eight to 10 cars racing in the arena, trying to knock out the competition by disabling their cars. The winner is the last car running. Broes said his biggest worry is being knocked out for hitting another driver’s side door — an immediate elimination offense.
“I don’t want to get disqualified on a technicality,” he said.
How does Broes think he and the ’85 Honda will fare come Saturday?
“I really don’t know. I’m going to go out there and have fun,” Broes said. But he does think there will be more derbies in his future.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
