People may not know the face of Reed Saunders, but they will certainly know his voice. The 25-year-old Colorado native is the new voice of Coors Field.
“I was pretty much giggling with elation,” Saunders said during a phone interview. The former Colorado Eagles public address announcer will be heard loud and clear come Opening Day, April 2, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Saunders was one of three finalists out of 250 applicants. He was announced as the new voice on 850 KOA radio on March 16.
“I was so happy,” Saunders said. “It’s a dream come true. The whole week I was trying to talk myself out of it and prepare for the worst.”
Saunders has always been an avid sports fan and growing up, he played every sport he could. It wasn’t until college when he was the PA announcer for the Colorado State University’s Women’s Volleyball team that he realized this could become his career. After graduating from CSU in 2003, Saunders became the announcer for the Colorado Eagles.
“I owe them so much,” he said. “That organization is just so great... They decided to give me a shot and it has been tremendous. I really have been able to hone my skills over the four years there.”
Still, Saunders realizes he has a big voice to fill. Al Roach, former PA announcer for the Rockies, dedicated 14 years to the team.
Saunders remembers going to baseball games when he was 12 and hearing Roach’s voice.
“He made the game so much fun,” Saunders said. “He’s great. He’s basically my idol.”
Saunders has been going over all of the players names and hopes Rockies fans will give him a chance.
Though he is thrilled by his new challenge, he doesn’t want to be the star of the show. Instead, he hopes to be the soothing voice in the background that is clear, concise and consistent.
“It’s just been a whirlwind of a ride,” Saunders said. “It hasn’t quite sunk in, but I’m starting to get a little nervous. Once I forget all the people and it’s just me and the words on paper, I should get into the routine.”

VITAL STATS Name: Reed Saunders, 25, of Westminster Company: Colorado Rockies Title: Public address announcer How long have you worked there? First day will be Opening Day, April 2
——— IN HIS WORDS
What makes you get out of bed in the morning? It feels great to be a part of the fabric of the Rockies game-day experience. I feel like I have the best job in the world, so early morning hours aside, it’s not that hard to get out of bed.
What impresses you? Accountable, low-maintenance people who can accurately quote movies.
Did you ever think in a million years you’d work here? Dreamed it, doubted it would ever actually come to fruition. It’s overwhelming.
If you weren’t doing this, what would you do? Drinking a Zima Tangerine alone in the fetal position in a dark corner quietly singing Taylor Hicks’ “Do I Make You Proud?” What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done while at work? My voice cracked not once but twice while introducing the Eagles onto the ice a couple years ago... Eeeeeeeeeagles sounded very high-pitched, and I just had to keep going.
What’s the most unusual thing you’ve done to make money? Played Julius Caesar in my senior Latin class’ improv “Ides of March” re-enactment during lunch hour in the cafeteria as a senior in high school when the original Caesar bailed out... I was “assassinated” by a bunch of freshmen with fake knives, they threw ketchup on me as fake blood, then drug me out of the cafeteria in my toga. I didn’t actually get paid for this, but it just shows how much I didn’t want to let those kids down.
What’s one thing about your job you would do, even if you weren’t paid to do it? Probably all of it. I love announcing. Though the money is nice.
What do you do when you’re not at work? Make mix CDs called the Reed Anthology. I started making them as a sort of soundtrack to my life back in ninth grade. In a related story, I was single at the time.
Pets? Family? No pets; Mom, Laurel; Dad, Steve; younger bro Lee, 23

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
