Amidst tea and conversation with members of local reggae band Peace Officer, some exciting things brewed: The ideas they have for a burgeoning Front Range reggae scene that combines great sounds with songs that shed light on the issues of the day —and their first full-length album.
“It’s kind of our mission to work with as many other musicians as possible who are reggae-based and socially aware,” Peace Officer guitarists and vocalists Andy Crow and Brian Zeiger said. “We’re definitely trying to build the scene in Fort Collins for the kind of music we’re playing.”
They begin their quest with a free show Wednesday, April 11. The Fort Collins quintet shares the stage at Hodi’s Half Note with Midwest reggae band Public Property, of Iowa City, Iowa.
Hodi’s is a place where bands like Peace Officer, local artists and entertainment lovers, can reach a new audience. The venue — once called the Starlight Theater — has an ambiance and warmth that appeals to the band’s members, who have played there before.
“I love playing that room. I like the feeling of the room itself,” keyboardist, trumpet player and vocalist, Jared Scherger said. “I just really like the attitude of the new owners, I like the way they’re going about it. They’re really trying to do something different in the music scene in Colorado. They’re bringing a good vibe back into that room. I think it’s working,” he said.
The dynamic of Peace Officer and their approach to the music has also been working.
Crow writes most of the lyrics. “Every time I have some peace and quiet, stuff just pops into my head. I’m definitely influenced by everything I hear, which is mostly underground reggae, hip-hop and some punk.”
The sounds come together for the group in jam sessions before rehearsals and shows.
It’s been a different story in the studio. Band members say the studio has proved stifling to their creative process.
“We need to have time to just screw around and not worry about using everything we record,” Zeiger said. With the help of a home recording studio, they hope for a full-length album by next fall. “Our major goal is to have a debut.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
