Recounting the ups and downs of "American Idol" might be a bit more difficult after this week. I now have two separate worlds to cover.
One is a world where firecrackers like Gina Glocksen — who have more than paid their auditioning dues — get kicked to the curb without a second thought. The other is "the universe of Sanjaya," where children cry, musical taste is irrelevant and hair rules all.
These two worlds are obviously symbiotic, so for sanity's sake I'll pretend they are the same place.
You know the worst "Idol" contestant ever has started to work Simon Cowell's nerves when the poor judge can't even say what's on his mind. The scowling Brit, after Sanjaya's stomach-turning rendition of "Cheek to Cheek" on Tuesday, attempted to employ reverse psychology on voters by calling it "incredible." He knew that wouldn't work, though, and on Wednesday King Malakar, the sultan of pitchiness, sailed through as Gina was reduced to tears. Poor Gina.
Seeing the rocker girl's song choice, with the lyric "smile though your heart is aching," become painful reality hit me and her fellow contestants where it hurts. Did you see Jordin Sparks' crocodile tears? Man, that was an ugly scene.
But, for the sake of the better singers left in the competition, we "Idol"-heads must move forward with hope in our hearts. We'll hope that Melinda Doolittle continues to give surprisingly upbeat performances like this week's sensational "I Got Rhythm." We'll pray that Jordin keeps reducing Paula Abdul to incoherent babble, because we love when that happens. And we'll keep our fingers crossed for Chris Richardson, who actually sang circles around Blake Lewis for once.
And how could I forget LaKisha Jones? Even though she should have taken Tony Bennett's advice and ended "Stormy Weather" with the big note, she still provided the most Fantasia-worthy moment of the season.
Yeah, there's still something to smile about in the "Idol" planetary system. Even if our hearts are aching just a little. ___

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
