Of all the bands to come out of the swing era of the 1930's and 1940's, very few have had the lasting influence to still be in existence in the 21st century. One exception is the Glenn Miller Orchestra, which will be playing tomorrow for one night only.
"Glenn Miller created a very unique sound in music. He came up in the teens and '20's with all the big time musicians and composers and at some point, realized that he had something to contribute," said Andy Segal, marketing technician for the Union Colony Civic Center. "He changed the style to making the horns more prominent, and that became his sound."
Miller decided to leave his band, despite the popularity it held, and join the Air Force during World War II, where he conducted the Army Air Force band and entertained the troops. Then, on Dec. 15, 1944, Miller disappeared while flying from England to France, in an attempt to arrive before his band. Although his body was never found, he was declared officially dead by the army a year later.
Even Miller's demise couldn't stop the 19 member band, which continues to play many of his original arraignments today. In 1956, the Miller estate allowed for the formation of what is known today as the Glenn Miller band.
"Other people took over, but tried to keep the music style his own," Segal said. "They have created more songs, but kept it in that same genre, which is why it is still popular today."
The orchestra, which has been led by musicians like Buddy DeFranco and Ray McKinley, and currently, Larry O'Brian, is fun for all ages, whether they are bringing back memories, or creating them. This is because the band tries to stay modern by combining classic big band songs with modern songs, as long as they stay in Miller's style.
"It is fun and danceable and that relates to people that are older and younger," Segal said. "They play songs that people have grown up with and bring back memories of the war and pre-war."

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
