The thermometer said it was winter outside, but it was warm winds and calm seas inside the Exhibition Hall at Island Grove Regional Park on Thursday.
The theme for the 19th annual Taste of Weld County was "Anchors Aweigh." The cruise ship motif offered vendors and visitors a welcome respite from the impending winter weather.
The restaurants decorated their booths accordingly, and some took the this even one step further, coordinating the food presented as well.
Adrienne Andrews, the owner of Canterbury Tea Room in Greeley, presented Pina Colada Trifle, and decorated her table with beach chairs and sunglasses. Trifle is the restaurant's signature dessert, and Andrews changes the ingredients each year to coincide with the event's theme.
"I can pretty much make a trifle out of anything," Andrews said. "The theme is a challenge, and I love it."
The restaurants were asked to bring samples that will showcase their menu items.
Kenny's Steakhouse in Greeley, with employees dressed in Hawaiian printed shirts, served sliced roast beef, bacon-wrapped water chestnuts in a chili sauce and chocolate-covered strawberries. The fare, which was representative of Kenny's catering menu, was carefully planned along the lines of a cruise ship buffet.
Greeley's Bread Board Bakery & Cafe owner Sue Bjorland, in her fifth year at the Taste, brought samples that showcase the restaurant's breads and desserts. She admitted she had a difficult time choosing what baked goods to bring, but not because of the theme.
"Everything is made from scratch, so it was hard to decide," Bjorland said.
Each booth was overflowing with good food, and the atmosphere was so warm and friendly, it was easy for people to forget the weather forecast. But the weather was not really a concern for the patrons who bought a ticket to sample the offerings from the nearly 30 restaurants.
Carolyn Winnett-Kuznik has been to the Taste every year since 2003, and this year she brought a friend who recently moved from California.
"We didn't even think about (the weather)," said Winnett-Kuznik. "This is just such a wonderful cause."
The event typically raises about $30,000 each year. The money goes to support Child Advocacy Resource Education (C.A.R.E.), an organization dedicated to strengthening families and preventing child abuse.
Despite the weather, C.A.R.E. director Gwen Schooley was optimistic about the turnout.
"The community always comes through," she said. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
