When thinking about the harp, one might envision classical music, soothing tones, and a laid-back evening. When thinking about Alfredo Rolando Ortiz playing the harp, however, that just isn't the case.
"The harp is a rhythmic instrument for dancing, and is romantic at times," Ortiz said. " Everything you thought before about the harp is not true. People who think they will relax to the harp, I say get ready to feel the beat."
Ortiz thinks it is important to do more at a concert than sit down and play. Using his life experiences, he enhances his performances by talking to his audience.
"I am not the everyday performer. I communicate with the audience," Ortiz said. "I use beautiful moments in my life and rhythmic elements of my music."
Born in Cuba and raised in Venezuela, Ortiz learned to play the harp from a friend, and although he said he has always been a harpist first, Ortiz also is a medical doctor.
"I put myself through school playing the harp," he said. "In medical school, someone heard me play the harp and asked me to play at a wedding."
Luck was on his side because a record producer at that wedding heard Ortiz, and signed him very shortly after. This started the harpist on his career that included more than 40 albums and a South American Gold Record.
"I was first a harpist, but continued being a physician for eight years," Ortiz said. "But I had to make up my mind because I was never there for my family. So I'm just harping around now."

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
