When Tim Yantis heard about the Kream of the Krop more than two years ago, he was determined to join.
"He walked into the music store where John Mills (the band's director) was working and asked to join," said Bob Johnson, the band's spokesman and producer. "He was bound and determined to play."
And it was this determination, and the spot that had become available with a recent member's leaving, that made Yantis just right for Kream of the Krop, a community-based big band.
His passion for the music created in this band never wavered, even when he was in an accident that might have deterred someone from practicing.
"He broke his ankle in a motorcycle accident, so in crutches he would come to practice and had (another member) give him a ride there," Johnson said.
Despite the seriousness of his determination and passion, there was a lighter side to Yantis, whose memory the band will honor with a concert on Sunday.
"It was fun to ride with him to gigs for the band," said Larry Besack, who played third trombone next to Yantis' second trombone. "He was very knowledgeable about music."
And with the musical influences in his life, it would have been hard for him to not be. A graduate of Drake University, he became friends with three musicians who also would leave their stamp on the musical world.
Jack Corner went on to be an arranger for companies such as Toyota and Pepsi, as well as TV shows. Don Gephardt has become the dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts at Rowan University in New Jersey. Jack Gillespie went on to become a conductor of headliners such as Bob Hope. All three will be performing in this concert to honor their friend.
And for a man who is known to his fellow band members for his great sense of humor, this concert is about more than honoring the memory of their fallen trombonist.
"I think it brings closure to the members of the band," Besack said. "We're a real close family, many have been in for 20 or 30 years and are really dedicated to it. We need this kind of thing to bring closure to one of our family members."

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
