David Silverstein, principal executive with Bayer Properties, stops mid-sentence.

“That’s a great sound,” he said.

The sound of construction roars in the background.

Silverstein holds the microphone toward the noise that at any other time would be easily overlooked, or even seen as a distraction. But for Silverstein, as well as the city of Fort Collins, it’s a sound they celebrate. It’s the sound that marks the groundbreaking of Front Range Village — a shopping center, or as people in the industry call it, a “lifestyle center” — at Harmony and Ziegler roads in southeast Fort Collins.

“It’s truly a great day for Fort Collins,” said Fort Collins mayor Doug Hutchinson Monday morning.

The $120 million-plus project will include a mix of retail, public service and office space. The 110-acre, 900,000-square foot village will be home to stores like Lowe’s SuperTarget, Staples, Sports Authority and TGI Friday’s and is expected to be completed July 27, 2008.

“This is really a pretty amazing event,” said Darin Atteberry, Fort Collins city manager. “We’ve worked hard for four and a half solid years.”

As part of the partnership, the lifestyle center will also feature the 16,000-square-foot Fort Collins Regional Library District-Southeast Branch. Fort Collins author and teacher Laura Resau presented a signed copy of her book, “What the Moon Saw,” to be the first book for the new library.

Atteberry said the new shopping center will give Fort Collins more of a choice in retail and will have a positive impact on the city’s economy.

“It’s taken a team effort and we have a great team in place,” Atteberry said. “This is a big deal and comes at a great time.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
