After spinning drum and bass for enormous packed houses in Germany, Belgium, Hungary and France, electronica pioneer Amon Tobin comes to Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on Thursday, May 3 thanks to Studio Gallery Wright Presents.
“I like small venues because the shows tend to be more intimate,” Tobin said during a phone interview while touring in Germany. “Unfortunately, you end up doing a lot of larger shows because it’s also not fair to disappoint too many people who can’t get tickets for a small room.”
The Brazilian-born artist, who is much more than just a DJ, is a sensation across Europe, Canada and the United States. So why come to a smaller town in the middle of a huge tour?
“It’s cool to get out to some places I don’t normally play,” Tobin said.
Three years after Tobin relocated from the U.K. to Montreal, Quebec, he landed the video game soundtrack “Chaos Theory: Splinter Cell 3.” The album was released a month before the game because the publisher was so thrilled with it. “UbiSoft approached me with the idea,” Tobin said. “We discussed it a lot and figured out a balance between all the technical limitations and making music that hopefully had some character.”
Tobin’s latest album, “Foley Room,” sounds like nothing you’ve ever heard before. The funny thing is, it was created by noises you have definitely heard before. A foley room is the place where sound effects for motion pictures are created using numerous toys, instruments and items. Out of the different aural sensations found on the album, ranging from roaring lions to a motorcycle revving, Tobin focused on the most surprising ones he found.
“The insects were pretty cool,” he said. “Also lots of machines and robotics. We (me and Vid Cousins) did lots of foley recordings too, which were a bit special. Not to mention the talents lent by so many wicked musicians.”
The dark beatsmith used a classic approach to create a brand-new music style by recording and manipulating things in nature. “It’s nothing new really. People have been using field recordings in music since the ’50s. Usually, though, it tends to be the domain of high-brow academic,” Tobin said.
As Tobin looks to the future, he said, “I’m working on a project called ‘Two Fingers’ right now with a fellow named Doubleclick. Very different from my own work and probably for a different label. It’s all a bit hush-hush right now, but hopefully we’ll release it next year.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
