Page 4 of 6 Sisters launch derby league in Fort Collins, first match in October
FOCO Girls Gone Derby.
No, they aren’t the subjects of drunken, crazed spring breaks in Mexico. Instead of wildness on camera, the FOCO Girls Gone Derby spin seriousness into the sport of roller derby in Fort Collins.
“Roller derby may have had a reputation as being a joke with fake fighting, but that’s not what we are about,” said Tawnika Trevena, coach of the FOCO Girls Gone Derby.
Trevena and her sister Jerica organized the Fort Collins league in mid-January. The sisters come from a skating family, which owns Rollerland Skate Center in Fort Collins.
“At first I kinda just thought there is a need,” Trevena said. “It’s something everyone is doing and being a family business, we should get up on this. Now that I’ve been doing it for a while, I’ve found out how enriching it is for women. It gives them bonds outside their persona of moms and business women. It’s something they can do for themselves.”
So far, the team consists of about 18 ladies ages 18 and older, all from a variety of career paths. They practice twice a week, preparing for their first bout sometime in early October.
“These women are athletes,” Trevena said. “Some of them weren’t before, but they sure are now. These girls do go out there and train hard for two hours, working on technique as well as the contact portion of it.”
Roller derby has spanned generations and is a sport many people can relate to. However, it is also resonating with many for the first time.
“You get some people who look at you kinda weird, but once you start talking to them, they open up and their curiosity starts growing. We are lucky for the Denver teams because people have heard about them. They have helped pave our way.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
