ATMOSPHERE

There is a bar, complete with a new patio to accommodate the standing-room-only crowd. It’s small, cozy, welcoming and familiar.

BE SEEN Thursday afternoons get crazy and Fridays and Saturdays also see a lot of activity.

WHO TO KNOW
Jan Peters filled our cups and knows all the regulars, but the rest of the staff was equally friendly.

WHY ITS COOL
They serve pretzels with the tasting. Yum!
They also sterile filter all of the beer instead of pasteurizing it. That means they filter out anything that could be bacteria.
The advantage of being a smaller brewery is that more handcrafted work goes into making the beer, giving it a more personal touch.

BEER CAPITA PER YEAR
4,000 to 5,000 barrels. A barrel is about 31 gallons.

ABOUT THE BREWERY
When Tom Peters turned 50, he had the mid-life crisis everyone talks about. After owning several businesses, he and his wife Jan questioned where they wanted to spend the next phase of their lives. Their answer — Fort Collins.

They left Florida and searching for a new business endeavor on the Front Range.
“We started looking at different businesses and saw a brewery listed,” Peters said. “I thought, ‘how odd’. You don’t see breweries for sale very often.”

The listing was for the former HC Berger brewery. Though Peters wasn’t really a beer drinker, he was impressed with the brewery. The couple bought it two years ago.

Fort Collins Brewery started as a lager brewery but now sells lagers and ales and continues to grow.
—————
BEER LINGO
“Our goal is not to be the largest brewery, but to have a comfortable operation,” Peters said.

• Rauchbier: an old German beer style, typically of dark color and smokey flavor (“rauch” is German for smoke).
• stout: a rich beer, sometimes made with caramel sugar and that has high hop content. Dark brown in color, full-bodied and slightly burnt in flavor.

ATMOSPHERE
There’s live acoustic music every Wednesday. A great way to unwind!

WHO TO KNOW
Brent Lopp. He’s a relatively new employee and is extremely personable — an all-around cool guy.

WHY IT'S COOL
Not only do they sell great beer, they also sell fancy bottle opener flip flops.

A half-gallon jug of Levity Amber comes complimentary with any flip-flop purchase.

Then, if you sport your flip flops at Odell Brewing Company on a Friday, you get $2 pints of Levity Amber. What a deal! Besides, who could pass up an afternoon relaxing on a large patio?

BEER CAPITA PER YEAR
33,000 barrels a year. A barrel is about 31 gallons. The facility can fill about 120 bottles a minute.

ABOUT THE BREWERY
Doug Odell crafted what started as a home hobby into the second microbrewery to open in Colorado.

“I have always been fascinated by brewing history in the United States,” he said.
He and his wife moved from Seattle to Fort Collins to open a family brewery in 1989.

The original brewery was housed in a grain elevator built in 1915, but after 5 years the company outgrew its facility and relocated to Lincoln Avenue.

In 1996, Odell Brewing Company began bottling its English style beers. Now, 10 years later, Odell beer can be found in seven states.

“We do produce a lot of beer, but we’re not really striving to go national,” said Brent Lopp, an employee at Odell Brewing Company.

BEER LINGO
ale: varies in color, more bitter than beer

• amber: beer that is reddish-brown in color

• pale ale: a highly hopped beer made from high-quality malt that’s dry in flavor
• porter: ale brewed from well-roasted barley, dark brown in color, full-bodied in texture, bittersweet or chocolaty in flavor

wheat beer: brewed with wheat malt, pale in color, slightly tart in flavor, sometimes very yeasty with a hint of clove

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
