Q: I have a huge problem! I live at home with my mom and it seems she just doesn’t have the motivation to lose weight. Well, maybe she does, but it’s not enough. All of the 17 years I’ve known my mom, she has been obese. What can I do to encourage her to lose weight? Do you have some helpful diet tips that would get her started? She even has her own little gym in our basement; don’t ask how many times she’s been on any of it. So, please help me help my mom.

A: I hate these questions because no matter what I say, I will be considered an asshole.
I won’t give you or anyone diet tips because that’s beyond my scope of practice. Your mother needs to exercise and the best way to encourage her is not to pester her (and that goes for husbands, too) but ask her to accompany you on walks, bicycle rides or to help you workout. Parents, siblings and partners find exercise through a kind of osmosis. If they see you doing it and feeling good from the results, then sometimes that feeling is contagious and will inspire them. It’s worth the shot. Complaining about it and sitting on your ass will never encourage anyone to become healthy. All it does is breed resentment and ultimately their death. Fitness is a hard pill to swallow when you’re on the other side of fat. So encourage by doing, not by talking.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
