John C. Maxwell, best-selling author and leadership expert, does his best to practice what he preaches.

“My life is simple,” Maxwell said. “Every day I wake up with the question: How can I add value to people’s lives?”

His answer is twofold — by writing and speaking. His mission to help others become effective leaders developed from his experiences as a pastor and eventually transferred to the corporate world. “Anyone can learn leadership skills,” he said. “Be who you really are, but be the best you can be.”

On May 9, Maxwell will speak about leadership in the workplace at the Lincoln Center as the Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual keynote speaker.
“The most common mistake people make is that they think leadership is a position,” Maxwell said. “The position doesn’t make the leader, the leader makes the position.”

In 1985, Maxwell founded INJOY Group, a volunteer organization offering resources and training material such as audio kits, instructional videos, online training and books, in addition to hosting seminars and conferences. He has lead trainings for corporations like AFLAC, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club and has mentored several sports groups such as the NCAA Coaches, Green Bay Packers, Atlanta Hawks, San Diego Padres and more.

His latest book, “Talent is Never Enough: Discover the Choices That Will Take You Beyond Your Talent,” discusses how certain choices can maximize a person’s talent. Other books address topics like failure, relationships, attitudes team work and decision making. Maxwell is in the beginning stages of a new book.

“Every evening I ask myself a second question: Did I add value to people?” Maxwell said. “If the answer is yes, then it was a good day and I can close my eyes and go to sleep.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
