Spider—Man caught moviegoers in his web over the weekend, as "Spider—Man 3" broke box office records by snaring an estimated $148 million in its first three days.
The third installment of the blockbuster franchise, featuring Tobey Maguire as the super-hero, beat out last summer's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," which held the previous all—time weekend debut record of $135.6 million, according to figures compiled by BoxOfficeMojo.com.
With $59.3 million on opening day Friday, "Spider—Man 3" also broke the single—day box—office record, also held by "Dead Man's Chest" with $55.8 million in its first day, according to the site.
"Spider—Man 3," distributed by Sony, opened on more than 10,000 screens at 4,252 theaters. Sony projected over the weekend that the movie would generate from $135 million to $145 million for the weekend.
The film was also the most expensive so far in the franchise. Sony spent $258 million on the Marvel Comics sequel compared to $200 million for "Spider—Man 2" and $139 million for "Spider—Man," according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
Fourteen sequels are scheduled to hit screens between Friday's debut of "Spider-Man 3" — the unofficial kickoff to the movie summer season — and the arrival of "Mr. Bean's Holiday" over the Labor Day weekend.
Not only is that the second-highest number of summer sequels ever; it's also the greatest concentration of third installments hitting the big screen at once.
Along with "Spider-Man," five other franchises will become trilogies between now and late August: "Shrek The Third," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Ocean's Thirteen," "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3."
The "Shrek" installment by DreamWorks Animation will debut in two weeks — on May 18 — while the "Pirates of the Caribbean" by Walt Disney Co. will hit theaters on May 25. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
