The final tally on "Spider-Man 3" propelled the Sony Pictures blockbuster even higher than projected, as the latest offering from the franchise cleared the $150 million mark, studio officials reported Monday.
"Spider-Man 3" snared $151.1 million in its web as it turned out about $3 million higher than the estimates released Sunday morning. Sony said it made another $231 million in the 107 territories where it played across the world during the weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $382 million worldwide.
"Spider-Man 3" shattered the previous record for three-day openings over the weekend, which was held by last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," the second installment in that series. That film made $135.6 million.
The third "Pirates" film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" will have a chance to one up "Spider-Man 3" later this month when it opens Memorial Day weekend. In between, "Shrek The Third" will hit screens.
"Spider-Man 3" was also the most expensive so far in the franchise. Sony spent $258 million on the Marvel Comics-based sequel compared with $200 million for 2004's "Spider-Man 2" and $139 million for "Spider-Man," released in 2002.
Fourteen sequels are scheduled to hit screens between Friday's debut of "Spider-Man 3" — the unofficial kickoff to the movie summer season — and the arrival of "Mr. Bean's Holiday" over Labor Day weekend.
Not only is that the second-highest number of summer sequels ever, but also it is the greatest concentration of third installments hitting the big screen at once.
Along with "Spider-Man," five other franchises will become trilogies between now and late August: "Shrek The Third," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Ocean's Thirteen," "The Bourne Ultimatum" and "Rush Hour 3." | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
