Mark Philippoussis
|
The show is called "Age of Love," and until now NBC has kept its premise a secret. No more, though.
The dating show, which premieres June 18, will test the veracity of dozens of newspaper and magazine trend stories and see whether a guy in his early 30s will fall for an older woman — when there are younger women available as well.
If you're a tennis fan, you may have heard of the guy in question: 31-year-old Mark Philippoussis, a one-time Wimbledon finalist whose love life has been tabloid fodder in his native Australia. Injuries have sidelined him for extended periods in recent years, but he's hoping to make a comeback on the men's tour this year.
In the show, a group of women in their 20s — the "Kittens" — will move into one floor of an L.A. high-rise. Another set of women in their 40s — the "Cougars" — will be on a higher floor, with Philippoussis in between. Philippoussis is initially unaware of the concept at first, knowing only that he's going to be on a dating show.
Host Mark Consuelos ("All My Children," "Missing") will introduce him to the 40-something women first, with the women in their 20s joining the game a little later. Weekly eliminations will pare the field to the one woman Philippoussis likes the most.
"Age of Love" comes from "Biggest Loser" producer JD Roth, who says the idea sprung from conversations he's had with his wife's female friends.
"I always listen to what the wives are talking about because they're always reading every magazine, watching 'Oprah,'" he told reporters recently. "So they're all talking about how they could get a guy (who's) 25, no problem. They're all around 40. ...
"The next thing you know the conversation is about Ashton and Demi, and 'He really loves her. They have a connection. There's a chemistry there. It's not about age.' Then you see Katie Couric with a guy 20 years younger. When you start talking about what's going on in pop culture, you realize there is no age of love." | Only registered users can write comments. | | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
