AMERICAN Idol
When: 6 p.m. Tuesday; results 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Where: Fox.
Theme: Each contestant does three songs.
___

As "American Idol" prepares to present its top three performers Tuesday night, it's harder to overlook the top-rated TV show's flaming absurdity: For weeks, we've been voting for singers based on how well they perform live on TV, yet we will hear the winner mostly in studio recordings on the radio or iPod.

We saw last season with Taylor Hicks what happens when the best "TV star" releases his first CD. Not much.

But this year, we're getting a thorough early look at what could be in store from this year's champion thanks to CD-quality studio recordings of every song since the top-12 stage. The full-length tunes are available to download for 99 cents each at downloads.americanidol.com until May 23.

Listening to the audio tracks reveals that Melinda Doolittle is the most radio-ready, Blake Lewis is more dynamic when performing live and Jordin Sparks can sound strident. It's also clear that viewers have picked the best contestants to make it this far.

Here are the "American Idol" songs worth compiling for a CD or iPod playlist from the top 12 contestants' studio recordings (available for 99 cents each at downloads.americanidol.com):

1. "You Give Love a Bad Name," Blake Lewis

2. "I (Who Have Nothing)," Jordin Sparks

3. "Have a Nice Day," Melinda Doolittle

4. "I'll Stand by You," Gina Glocksen

5. "Where the Blacktop Ends," Phil Stacey

6. "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying," Chris Richardson

7. "Stormy Weather," LaKisha Jones

8. "Besame Mucho," Sanjaya Malakar

9. "Trouble Is a Woman," Doolittle

10. "Time of the Season," Lewis

11. "A Broken Wing," Sparks

12. "Blaze of Glory," Stacey

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
