If there is any question about the potential of Sole Side, let it be quelled simply by the makeup of the band — Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese Incident, DJ Logic and Speech from Arrested Development.

Even though the group will have rehearsed only a handful of times before its debut gig at the Aggie Theatre, the plan is to just “see what happens.” And the upside of this rather unusual gathering looms large.

“Although it’s a weird pairing, there is a common ground around funk and danceable tunes,” Hollingsworth said by phone from his Boulder home.

“DJ Logic with his super fat grooves seemed like the logical choice. And I have always been a big fan of Speech’s lyrics, which is a common ground as well in that he speaks from the heart about being in nature, being soulful.”

Rounding out the trio on stage are members of The Motet: Ryan Jalbert on guitar, drummer Damien Hines, and bassist Garrett Sayers, who bring a world beat meets funk groove to the proceedings. What this all means musically is still up for grabs.

Hollingsworth studied jazz in college and discovered his knack for creative explorations with SCI. DJ Logic has performed with a who’s who of musicians across all genres, including Medeski, Martin and Wood, Vernon Reid of Living Color, and of course, SCI.

Speech, while spending most of his time rhyming out socially conscious lyrics with Arrested Development, also dabbles in soul and gospel.

“We’re still figuring our identity,” Hollingsworth said with a laugh. “We’ll probably do some of my funk originals from my solo disc, some Arrested Development numbers, some Logic stuff, and that leaves good space for some improvisation.”

Hollingsworth expects the rehearsals will yield some fresh songs — the three have been e-mailing ideas back and forth over the past few months and hope to attain some cohesiveness before May 17.

But he figures much of the night will encompass open ended jams that could go anywhere.

“I do have ideas for some sonic landscapes that I hope DJ Logic will go into with me. It might be some things he hasn’t done. And I think Speech can freestyle over the top. We’re all open to different ideas,” he said.

“We’ll have some rehearsals, but I hope we’ll leave some ends loose so we can make music spontaneously on stage.”

Considering the stranger pairings that have occurred in recent years — like Elton John and Eminem — there is no reason to believe this one shouldn’t work out.

On paper, the odds look good.

“It’s the brainchild of the three of us,” Hollingsworth added. “Sure, it’s a little odd, but I like putting myself outside of my comfort zone. This is the first gig, expect the unexpected.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
