The analysis I heard most often this week from "Idol" fans was that if either Melinda Doolittle or Jordin Sparks were eliminated, next week would be no contest — that whichever one survived would walk all over Blake Lewis, because he's just not in their league as a vocalist — or, particularly in Jordin's case, a personality.
So now that theory gets to be tested.
It seems like it makes sense. But then, it also seemed to make sense that Blake wouldn't make it through this week, because to be blunt, he just isn't as good as the other two.
So who knows? Who would have thought so many of us would ever pay $1.50 a bottle for water?
Predictions are hard.
Anyhow, back to "Idol." Some folks also suggested the "Idol" producers wanted exactly the result we now have, figuring Blake vs. one of the two women would be a livelier final than the two women against each other.
OK, that's a bit of a conspiracy theory, and most conspiracy theories don't hold up for the simple reason that the alleged conspirators just aren't that smart. But man, there's got to be some explanation why Melinda isn't in the finals.
You could take the best notes from every one of the other finalists, put them together, and Melinda could sing rings around them. She understands singing in a way that Jordin does not at this point in her life - that's the difference between being 29 and being 17, again - and she's just plain better than Blake. If you were walking down the street and heard Blake singing in a some smoky club, would you be drawn in? No. Melinda? Yes.
Now Jordin will probably get better as she goes along. Blake probably will, too. Neither of them is a bad singer. But with the two of them in the finals and Melinda home watching in Nashville, it's hard not to conclude that "Idol" is looking as much for personalities as it is for singers. That would certainly explain Jordin — which isn't a knock on her. It may or may not explain Blake.
Everyone who makes the final three can probably have a career and sell some records, simply because so many people saw them get so much face time on prime-time TV. And yes, as we've seen in previous seasons, the system is the system. But the fact voters don't have Melinda as one of their choices in the finals next week cheapens the deal both for them and for "American Idol." ___

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
