America's favorite ogre scored some long green this weekend.
"Shrek the Third," the further adventures of a grumpy ogre and his wisecracking pals, earned $122 million in its first three days, the highest opening weekend of all time for an animated film and the third highest for any film, trailing only "Spider-Man 3" and the second "Pirates of the Caribbean."
But the record may not last a week. The third installment of "Pirates" is due out Friday.
"We expect a very good run for 'Shrek the Third,'" said Anne Globe, president of marketing for Paramount Pictures, which released "Shrek." "But there's a lot of strong competition out there, with 'Spider-Man 3' still popular and 'Pirates' looking to break more records next weekend."
Hollywood's strategy of kicking off the summer with blockbuster sequels is working out so far. If "Pirates" does as well as expected, three of the four highest openings of all time could be recorded this month.
"Spider-Man 3" was in second place this weekend with $28.5 million, bringing its 17-day total to $281.9 million.
Globe said "Shrek the Third" — voiced by Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy — exceeded studio projections of $100 million and attributed this pleasant surprise to an unexpectedly strong showing of grownup fans without their kids in tow.
"About half the patrons were (adults)," she said. "That's unusually strong for an animated film."
Globe also said there are plans for more films in the "Shrek" series. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
