Just hours before Paris Hilton turned herself in to serve a 23-day prison term, the hotel heiress told reporters: “I did have a choice to go to a pay jail. But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I’m not and that’s why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it, and I’m going to be treated like everyone else. I’m going to do the time, I’m going to do it the right way.”

QUESTION: What is a pay jail? ANSWER: “This is a very unique kind of facility within a facility, or a unit within a facility,” says Jeffrey Ian Ross, a criminologist at the University of Baltimore. “It’s usually for a short-term stay. The inmate pays a certain amount of money. They get a little better quality of facility and they get access to things, depending on the place.”
Ross says there’s a long history of having prisoners pay for things while they’re behind bars — and that it’s normal in some countries.
“The practice of having prisoners pay for things and special things isn’t new,” Ross said. “Having them pay for the quality of jails is new.”
Certain municipalities also have “pay-to-stay” programs, where inmates pay a certain amount of money per day and can leave the jail to go to work, returning at night. They often are kept away from the county jail population and sometime do chores, like laundry.
The Associated Press story on Paris Hilton’s incarceration noted that when actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was sentenced to three days in jail for slapping a cop in 1990, she paid $85 to stay at the El Segundo jail near the Los Angeles International Airport.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
