Burning Cash To Burn Rubber
Everyone has their passion, and for these guys it's cars. Classic cars, stock cars, hot rods, 'vettes — you name it they love 'em.

If you don’t have $235, 000 to spend on an all original 1967 Corvette Sting Ray Convertible with 427/435 horsepower engine and 4-speed manual transmission, or even a paltry $100,000 to drop on a custom 1932 Ford three-window street rod, then viewing these and the many other exotic cars at the Silver Grill Old Town Car Show, or the Northern Colorado Corvette Club Car Show, both on the same day, may be your only options.

For now, anyway.

“You’ve got those who are dreaming about the day they will own one, and you’ve got those who have already reached that dream and own one already,” explained Northern Colorado Corvette Club member Doran Beaman of the appeal that keeps people coming to car shows.

“I think a lot of it is that it brings back memories for people,” added Eric Peratt, owner of Pinkie’s Rod Shop, which specializes in building custom hot rods. “People are starting to get into the cars they remember from when they were growing up. When you get 200 to 2,000 cars at events, they just enjoy looking at them and remembering the past.”

Both shows expect to draw hundreds of exotic cars. Beaman expects around 130 Corvettes for his event at Dellenbach Motors, while the Old Town show traditionally draws at least a couple hundred vehicles from Model Ts to Cadillacs and everything in between.

Collector cars generally fall into two categories: custom and stock (although there are some gray areas within that). Custom cars are often more popular as people try to create a vehicle that matches their personality.

“There’s the saying ‘You are what you drive,’ and I think a lot of people take that to heart,” Beaman said. “It’s the second most important thing you do in your life next to buying a house. … (At a car show, people) are going to see what someone else has, and think about what changes they might want to make on their car. This is what fascinates people, that you can actually do this with a car with time and money, and you need lots of both.”

As cool as it is to see a Corvette with a 600 horsepower engine or gull-wing doors, or a bright purple 1968 GTO with an air filter popping out of the hood, these cars are actually worth less than their stock counterparts that remain in all original form.

“Those are desirable because they are all original and they didn’t have many options, so there might not be lot of them,” Peratt said. “If people kept them in storage, and were single owners and it happened to be a hemi car, they can bring God-awful numbers. $200,000-$500,000 is not out of the question these days, but I think over half a million is out of control for a car.”

While Beaman said he has two Corvettes in his collection — both stock anniversary editions (he hopes to eventually own all four anniversary editions), and will present one in the Corvette show — Peratt actually doesn’t drive his own hot rod, he just builds them. His father’s car — the ’32 three window mentioned above — will be on display at the show.

At least he can ask for the keys every now and then.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
