REIGNING CHAMPS HAVE A VISION

Harvey and Sally Roth aren’t returning to the Silver Grill Cafe Old Town Car Show in Fort Collins this year just because they are reigning champions.

There is something special brewing in the back of their minds.

It was 1957 when the couple met. Harvey, 69, drove a brand new 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. And with the 50th anniversary of the couple’s first date approaching, the memories of the many dates in that car are flooding forward.

“It’s the 50th birthday for that car,” Sally, 65, said. “So it makes (the car) kind of special — and all the memories of our being together for those 50 years.”

Although it was their 1956 Chevy Del Ray that they won first place with last year, the Roths are leaning toward taking a replica of that memory-making ’57 this year for nostalgic reasons.

Since their first show in 2000, the couple has accumulated more than 60 awards for four different restored vehicles, including a 1932 Ford Roadster — which they bought already restored — and what is known as the tri-five (a ’55 Chevy Bel Air, a ’56 Chevy Del Ray and a ’57 Chevy Bel Air).

The biggest award was a Gold Award on the ’55 for best overall car at the Classic Chevy International Show in Breckenridge.

The ’57 was the first car they restored after Harvey turned over his Severance Garage business to his son, Darrell.

They bought the black hardtop with red and black interior in California in 1986, but it sat for awhile in the couple’s garage before they decided to undertake the job of bringing it back to mint condition.

Mechanics and body repair is in the family’s blood. Harvey owned the Severance Garage for more than 20 years before Darrell took over.

“It’s just something I’ve always been interested in,” Harvey said. “Cars are our hobby.”

The ’56 that won last year’s show had been in the family for a long time.

They bought the car in 1976 from the 9th Avenue Wrecking Yard in Greeley, and it sat in the garage until 1983 when Darrell dissembled it. But it sat unfinished when they realized how much work it would take to put it all back together, they said.
But, in 2004, they figured the time was right.

“We totally dissembled it,” Sally said. “Every bolt and screw. It took us 18-months to put it back together.”

Harvey, who spent 50-60 hours a week on his candy orange, prize possession, said it was much more intense than anything he had ever done before.

“It was a full-time job,” he said with a laugh.

There is never has been, until now, any rhyme or reason to which car or cars the couple takes to a show. Harvey said most of the shows have their own personality, so he generally tries to fit a car to that.

Although Harvey is facing some health problems, he said he’d like to continue restoring cars for as long as possible. And there are many more waiting in the garage — a ’57 Chevy, a ’36 Ford and a ’41 Ford.

“As long as the health holds out, we’ll probably still be back,” Sally said, “because you just meet a lot of people with the same interest as you. And it’s just fun hanging out with them.”

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
