COMING BACK TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
By Erin Frustaci
Mission 19 is coming back to where it all began. Before all the shows, the traveling and the bumper stickers, Ryan McConeghy and Joe Nolan were two freshman who met in the dorms at Colorado State University and shared a love for music.
That was more than 11 years ago, and they’ve been playing together around the country ever since. The popular pop rock band will perform on their home turf Saturday during BrewFest.
“We’re just pretty normal guys who like to make music and have fun,” said Nolan, vocalist, guitarist and mandolin player. “We’ve gotten to so some really cool things. There’s been doors that wouldn’t have been opened to us if it weren’t for music.”
They have shared the stage with stars like John Mayer, Hootie & the Blowfish, Guster, Sister Hazel and Tonic, to name a few.
Sure, things are different now. Joe lives in Pittsburgh and Ryan McConeghy, vocalist and lead guitarist, is in Denver. Every weekend the two hop on different planes to meet for shows.
“It’s tough physically and emotionally,” McConeghy said. “Being gone all the time takes a strain on personal relationships, but it’s worth it. My love for music keeps me doing it. The thrill I get when I’m on stage — there’s nothing like it.”
Nolan said they are both still committed 100 percent to the music. Most of the time it’s the duo on stage, however you’ll get to see the band in full on Saturday.
The guys said they still plan to make a new album but are vague with a time frame. Their first album was released summer 2003.
“I feel in constant competition with myself to write something better than I’ve already written,” McConeghy said.
The guys have also performed a few solo gigs here and there to challenge themselves. Every other Monday, Mc Coneghy plays at a club in Vail to hone his skills.
“It’s always scary going up and doing it by myself,” he said. “They always say to try doing something that scares you and playing by myself scares the hell out of me.”
Ultimately, though, their mission is to continue making, recording and performing music.
“It’s just pop rock,” Nolan said. “It’s folksy, but not really. It’s singer-songwriter, but with a whole band and two singer-songwriters. We’re not doing anything experimental. We’re a pop rock band and always will be.”

WHAT'S IN A NAME? We were watching Road Rules on MTV when the words Mission 19 came across the TV. We were probably drunk, and we thought it would be a neat band name.
It sounded good to us, it stuck and it worked.
— Joe Nolan of Mission 19.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
