FREE RIDE, TAKE IT EASY

Timberline church provides a free alternative to drinking and driving

By Erin Frustaci

Friends don’t let friends drive drunk. But, should you find yourself friendless in a
beer line at Brewfest, volunteers from Timberline Church will fill-in.

“There’s so many dumb things people do when they’re drinking, but the dumbest thing anyone can do is drive,” said Reza Zadeh, a pastor at Timberline Church in Fort Collins.

So, in an effort to curb such dumbness, the church offers free rides home from the Colorado Brewers’ Festival.

“I think Brewfest is such a huge community event,” Zadeh said. “I still love it. It’s part of the Fort Collins culture and this is a way to serve the community.”

This will be the fourth year that volunteers from Timberline will offer free rides during the festival.

The free rides program spun off of an idea written on a napkin during a spring break mission trip. The idea was to give free rides in Fort Collins.

“I think people are so taken back that other people will give them a free ride home,” Zadeh said.

The group asks nothing in return and doesn’t count how many rides it gives, but Zadeh estimates it was about 300 last year. The church rents 15 passenger vans and equips them with tubs and plastic bags.

“Throwing up is inevitable,” Zadeh said. “We take precautions. We’ve gotten smart.”
To meet the demand, the operation will need about 40-60 volunteers throughout the weekend.

“We are not there to judge,” he said. “Some of my good friends came out of people I gave rides to.”

There will be other ways to get home, too.

Two shuttle services, Dingo Travel and Shamrock Shuttle Service, will take you home for a flat fee. The pick-up location will be near the intersection of College and Mountain avenues.

Jordan Coombs, owner of Dingo Travel Shuttle, said he got permission to increase his hours of service for the event. His shuttle will be running all day, instead of the
normal 9 p.m.-3 a.m. time.

Bob Flynn, operations manager for Shamrock Yellow Cab of Fort Collins, said his company will put as many cars on the road as possible. This means drivers who typically only work during the week, might work extra hours.

Though New Year’s is by far the busiest time, Flynn said Brewfest is also up there.
“I recommend allowing extra time,” Flynn said.

“If you are planning to drink, leave your vehicle at home and take a cab down.”

For those who do decide to drive, it’s wise to have a designated driver. DD’s will receive complimentary Pepsi drink products at the Colorado Brewers’ Festival.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
