An eight-member band, 12 Cents for Marvin plays with the energy of 80.
A combination of bass and acoustic guitars, drums, trumpets, a saxophone, trombone and a funny contraption called a theremin, adds up to ska magic on stage.
Lead singer Tom Werge, along with Hilary and Aaron Spriggs, Nik Levinsky, Soren Daugaard, Greta Cornett, John Giordenengo and Phuong Nguyen, have been together for almost 11 years.
They come from different states, backgrounds and musical influences, but when you put the group — whose members’ ages range from 40s to 20s — together on stage, they have one common goal: to jam.
With its first full length CD, “Change,” already on the racks, 12 Cents is set to release its sophomore album, “B-Load,” on July 7 at the Skankin’ Up the Poudre concert. ————
UPCOMING SHOWLook for 12 Cents for Marvin at 4:15 p.m. Brewfest (Sunday) on the Old Town Square stage. Go to 12Cents.com for more on the band

NEXTnc: Who’s Marvin? Aaron (Theremin, percussion): He’s a crazy bum… Nik (guitar): To answer that question you have to buy our next CD. The first song explains it.
NEXTnc: With only two ladies out of eight band members, does it get a little testosterone crazy? Aaron: Only when we have farting contests. Hilary (bass): The girls are tomboyish enough that it doesn’t matter. Phoung (saxophone): Hilary is more of a man than me.
NEXTnc: Which one of you has the weirdest habits? Aaron: Me. I like to eat food I find on the street. Tom (vocals, trumpet): Aaron likes to pick up candy off the street too.
NEXTnc: If you had to do a cover of a hip-hop song, which would you do? Nik: We already did Outkast’s “SpottieOttieDopalicious.” Phoung: Ice Cube’s “Today Was a Good Day.” Hilary: What about “White and Nerdy?”
NEXTnc: What did you each want to be when you grew up? Greta (trumpet): A professional basketball player. Hilary: A private detective. John (trombone): An herpetologist. Aaron: A mad scientist… I’m getting there. Phoung: A super hero. Nik: A musician. Tom: A chef… but now all I cook is Ramen. | Only registered users can write comments. Please login or register. |

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
