Prism’s objective is to take what a DJ usually does and recreate it with a full band.

“It’s electronica, but also jam band,” said Jacob Smith, drummer in the Fort Collins band. “We do a lot of trans, house and break beats.”

The group has been around for two and a half years and will go on its first tour for three weeks in August.

“Our influences are so different. The more each of us puts our part into it, the more our music grows and changes. It becomes something new, which is really cool.”
Prism will perform at a benefit concert at The Aggie for Heather Coombs, 38, of Fort Collins on June 30.

Coombs was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago. She beat it the first time, but it has returned.

“She’s been a part of the Fort Collins community for 20 years,” Smith said.

Two other bands, Mumbuli and Smoking Section, will also perform. There will be a suggested donation as well as a silent auction.

——————  NEXTNC'S CONVERSATION WITH PRISM  ——————

NEXTnc: What’s your favorite Fourth of July tradition?
SMITH: Usually just going to shows. And really, who doesn’t love fireworks? I’ll probably go to a show. There’s always a lot of good music going on that time in the summer.

NEXTnc: What do you ultimately hope to achieve with your music?
SMITH: Just getting a good fan base that you can really connect to and helping enhance people’s lives with music. It would be nice to make a living off of it … but just connecting with fans and having them dance.

NEXTnc: What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened at a practice?
SMITH: We’re always making fun of each other. We all like rival basketball teams, so we always have games on. We try to watch basketball during practice, so we will be talking shit about each other’s teams in the middle of practice, sometimes in the middle of a song.

NEXTnc: What CD are you embarrassed to admit you own?
SMITH: I really like The Dismemberment Plan because it’s indie rock and I don’t really like much indie rock, so I probably wouldn’t tell anyone I own that. I also own every single Eminem album.

NEXTnc: As a kid, what was your favorite subject in school?
SMITH: School was never my thing necessarily, but I always loved writing — creative writing and poetry. I was also in band. I was a band dork.

FullMetal Alchemist (48)

FullMetal Alchemist"Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth."

3 Wise-asses (15)

3wiseassesWe're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!) We call it insight, you call it what you will.

Ravings, rantings, and gibberish. (36)

DrewWhat is up FoCo? I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado. I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks. Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know! --Drew
