Not many people know much about Henderson Calvin Howard. His large gravestone in Grandview Cemetery in Fort Collins simply reads “Howard.”
Just down the street from the cemetery is the H.C. Howard Block building, which now houses Meanwhile Back at The Ranch and is next to CooperSmith’s.
So, who exactly is this Howard person?
Phil Carpenter, cemetery supervisor and historian, said he only knows a little bit about Howard.
“He was a Civil War soldier recognized with a Medal of Honor,” Carpenter said.
It’s fitting during the Fourth of July, a time when our country celebrates its freedom, to look back and recognize community forefathers who had a hand in making the United States what it is today.
The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor in action against an enemy force for individuals serving in the Armed Services of the United States. It was established by Congress on July 12, 1862. More than 3,400 soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen have been recognized with the medal for risking their lives above and beyond the call of duty.
Howard, a member of Corporal Company B, 11th Pennsylvania Reserves, during the Civil War, was awarded the Medal of Honor on March 30, 1898.
According to the U.S. Army Center of Military History’s Web site, Howard was honored for pursuing an enemy sharpshooter when he encountered two others, whom he bayoneted. He was wounded three times in action.
Howard, who was born Sept. 16, 1839, is one of 200 Civil War soldiers buried at Grandview Cemetery, but he is the only Medal of Honor recipient. According to Carpenter, there are seven other Medal of Honor recipients from the Civil War buried in Colorado.
“He was a businessman in town,” Carpenter said. “Most people aren’t aware he is buried here.”
He died at the age of 80 on Dec. 13, 1919. Last year, his grave was part of the Cemetery Stroll, which highlights notable people buried in the cemetery.
“Every life has a story,” Carpenter said. “Some might be more well known than others, but in that family that person is just as well known as someone else to their family.”

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
