RED, WHITE AND BLUES Hear freedom ring with Tempa and the Tantrums soulful sound
By Erin Frustaci
Tempa Singer's earliest memory is of music. The Denver singer-songwriter vaguely remembers hearing music from her crib as a child.
Now, the professional musician is giving Colorado’s music scene something to remember.
Tempa and the Tantrums combines soulful blues and jazz with catchy zydeco and funk within its signature sound, a sound Fourth of July revellers in Civic Center Park will get a chance to hear.
“I took all the music I loved and mixed it all up,” Tempa said.
Though she’s inspired by legendary women of music like Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Bonnie Raitt, Koko Taylor, Diana Krall, Patsy Cline and Joni Mitchell, she appreciates all genres.
“Growing up around music allowed me to have an open mind for music,” she said. “I love any kind of music as long as it is good.”
Tempa wrote her rst song at the age of 4 and sang for a radio station at 7.
Her childhood was lled with song and dance.
“Bluegrass is de nitely part of my roots,” she said. “It’s what I grew up with. It’s like going back home.”
Home, for a while during her childhood, was a van in Florida with her hippie mother.
“Growing up without television definitely in uenced my songwriting,” she said. When they moved out of the van into a trailer, she got her own kerosene lamp to read by at night.
“We still didn’t have electricity,” she said. “I had a cassette player that I would take out into the woods and sing into.”
Life moved at a slower pace, but she lived in the moment. She still lives for the music.
“It’s music ’til I croak, in any way shape or form I can do it in,” Tempa said.
Her band is working on a third CD and is planing a tour in Europe next year. Watching Tempa and the Tantrums is like going to a zydeco party in New Orleans. You may sweat a little bit and women might kick off their shoes, but you will certainly have a good time.

| | "Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is Alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only truth." | |
| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
