Many iconic scenes from World War II films have solid-looking planes zooming aggressively through battle-strewn skies, aiming their guns for victory.
Now the flying glory days of World War II will be resurrected with the landing of some of the surviving bomber jets at the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport, and "the effect is very strong," according to Hunter Chaney, Marketing Director at the Collings Foundation.
The Wings of Freedom Tour will showcase three aircraft that were used in WW II: the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Nine O Nine" Heavy Bomber, the Consolidated B-24 Liberator "Witchcraft" heavy bomber, and the North American B-25 Mitchell "Tondelayo" medium bomber.
The tour is "not in any way glamorizing (World War II)," Chaney says. "There are a lot of kids that died during this time."
"We want to find the most effective way to remind people about World War II," he continues. The Collings Foundation, which operates the Wings of Freedom Tour, works to make people understand their American heritage through direct participation.
Visitors to the display can "crawl through (the planes) and check them out" for small donations, or can even take 30 minute flights in the planes for larger donations. The money from the donations "gets put right back into the planes," Chaney asserts.
The aircraft crews and some WW II veterans will be on hand to give information about the planes and their histories.
Local veterans are also encouraged to come and share their experiences with the public, which contributes to the education and memory the tour strives to capture.
The Wings of Freedom Tour serves as a tribute to the men who designed, built, flew, and maintained the aircraft as well as all those they helped to protect, according to a press release.

| | We're not that bright, even though in our own little world, we're geniuses. We like 80s hair bands and one-hit wonders, but among us we have respectable tastes, too. Metallica, Iron Maiden, U2. Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)
We call it insight, you call it what you will. | |

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
