It’s mid July, in the middle of summer, and what’s there to do? Summer festivals like NewWest Fest are still a ways off.
So, some folks in Loveland thought it would be a good idea to throw a party of their own to showcase their community. They called it SummerFest in the Rockies and it takes place July 13-15.
“When we started planning this event, the idea was to have a large, communitywide festival. We just wanted to start promoting the downtown area, get people into the area and start enjoying Loveland,” Engage Loveland executive director Kim Vecchio said.
It’s the first in what organizers hope will become an annual gathering.
The three-day event features children’s activities such as train rides, pony rides, treasure hunt, children’s Ferris wheel, super trampoline, water slide, bounce castles and face painting. For the adults there is a beer and wine garden, arts and crafts vendors and the Front Range Mustang Car Club exhibition.
Of course, no festival is complete without live music. Summerfest features area acts in a variety of genres from bluegrass to blues, funk to rock and everything in between.
Saturday night concludes with a special fireworks display over Foote Lagoon.
Summerfest actually kicks off Friday night with a special gourmet wine tasting.
The event will feature up to 60 different types of wine, according to Shawn Cooper, wine consultant for World Beverage and the man in charge of lining up the wines for tasting.
Cooper said some Colorado wines will be represented at the tasting. Sadly, Loveland’s own Valley of the Wind and Trail Ridge wineries have not been invited. Cooper refused to explain his reasoning for not including local wineries in an event designed to focus attention on Loveland.
“That’s up to me,” he said.
Assorted “wine-type food,” will be on hand to cleanse the palate, caterer James Buehier said.
This includes finger foods such as cheeses, veggies and dips, fruits and his specialty Napa cabbage wraps with prosciutto ham and pine nuts in a mixture of cream and blue cheese.
“We just try to keep going along with theme of wine and cheese,” he said, “but we want to have a few other things too.”
Music for the evening will be provided by the Huge Jazz Quartet.
“We think this will be a great chance for people to get out and see what Loveland has to offer,” Vecchio added. “It’s before the (Larimer County) fair and Sculpture in the Park, so it’s really a great way to kick off summer.”

Pursuit of all things trivial is a lifestyle, not just a game. We like some sports, love other sports, and can find something to say about anything. We watch TV and movies and we've read a book or two, even a few classics (Yes, Classic Comics count!)

| | What is up FoCo?
I am a recent college graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead. After recieving my B.A. in English and Mass Communications this past August I moved down to Colorado.
I enjoy long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and heavy metal. My hobbies include reading and writing, music, movies, and getting drunk. Some of my favorite contemporary authors include Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk, and Kurt Vonnegut. My top movies are anything directed by Kubrick. I enjoy listening to anything that rocks.
Right now I am just trying to get to know Colorado and FoCo better. Mostly in order to find the best drink specials on each day that ends in Y. So if you know where I can get a cheap drunk on, let me know!
